Divinity fan discovers massive secret hiding in the game’s trailer

3 August 20262 Mins Read

Divinity is the next game coming from Larian Studios, the team behind the award-winning, genre-defining Baldur’s Gate 3, and confusingly, it’ll actually be the seventh game in the Divinity series. Divinity was revealed during The Game Awards 2025 after a mysterious tease with a statue (that we now know to be the hellstone) in the Mojave Desert, but all we’ve seen so far is a three-minute-long cinematic trailer.

However, seven months after that trailer, content creator WolfheartFPS claims to have decoded a message that was hidden in plain sight during the reveal. The trailer opens with an old man chained up, with barbed wire and metal wrapped around his head and lacerations all over his body. He’s also wearing a spiky crown engraved with symbols.

Four days ago, 3D animation and visual effects studio Unit Image shared a behind-the-scenes video of their work with Larian Studios on the cinematic trailer via LinkedIn. In this video, the model of the man is shown in much greater detail, including the symbols on the crown.

Wolfheart thinks these symbols are based on Elder Futhark, a writing system used during the Migration Period (300-600). It’s the oldest runic alphabet we know of, and is named after the phoneme of the first six runes, which essentially make F, U, Th, A, R, and K sounds.

Wolfheart explains that deciphering Elder Futhark is tough due to how phonetic it is, but he thinks he’s figured out that the runes on the man’s crown read “chaos is coming.” Well, more specifically: “kay oss iz kum ing.”

In Divinity lore, the Lord of Chaos is the creator of demons, and as far as we know, he is trapped in Tartarus, the game’s version of hell. One popular theory following the cinematic trailer is that Divinity will be focused on chaos, thanks to the appearance of the hellstone and how chaotic the trailer is, so this checks out.

There is no confirmed release date for Divinity yet, but much like Baldur’s Gate 3 and the two Divinity: Original Sin games before it, there’s every chance it will be released in early access first.

Larian Studios knows that Divinity trailer was pushing it — that’s the point
