Expedia Just Announced a Major New Perk That Could Make Flight Delays a Lot Less Miserable

10 October 20265 Mins Read

There’s nothing quite like the gut-wrenching feeling of checking your airline app as you approach your terminal and seeing the most dreaded word next to your flight: Delayed.

Suddenly, your carefully planned itinerary is out the window, the airport Starbucks line is a mile long and every available seat at your gate has mysteriously disappeared.

But what if your next flight delay came with a silver lining? Say, a comfortable airport lounge with complimentary snacks, drinks and Wi-Fi instead of another hour spent camping out next to a charging station?

Thanks to a newly expanded perk from Expedia, that scenario could become a reality for more travelers.

On October 6, the online travel booking giant announced an expansion of its One Key loyalty program, extending complimentary airport lounge access during qualifying flight delays to more members.

And while free lounge access sounds almost too good to be true, there are a few important catches to know before your next trip.

How Does Expedia’s Free Airport Lounge Access Work?

Under the expanded benefit, eligible Expedia One Key Gold and Platinum members can receive complimentary airport lounge access when their registered flight is delayed by 90 minutes or more.

Previously available to Platinum members, the perk now includes Gold members, opening the door for more travelers to take advantage of a little VIP treatment when their travel plans go sideways.

Here’s how it works: Travelers book an eligible flight through Expedia, register their itinerary for the benefit at least 24 hours before departure and wait for the airline’s flight status updates.

If the flight experiences a qualifying delay, eligible travelers can receive digital lounge passes for participating airport lounges through the LoungeKey network or access to other participating airport experiences.

Think of it as a consolation prize for an unexpected layover, only with comfier chairs and considerably better snacks.

Of course, lounge access is subject to availability and participation, so not every airport or itinerary will qualify.

Who Qualifies for Expedia’s Free Airport Lounge Access?

Here’s where the fine print comes in.

The complimentary lounge benefit is reserved for One Key Gold and Platinum members, meaning simply having an Expedia account isn’t enough to unlock the perk.

One Key is Expedia Group’s free loyalty program, which allows travelers to earn rewards and access benefits when booking eligible travel through Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo.

But Gold and Platinum are higher membership tiers, earned through qualifying travel activity.

To use the delay benefit, members must book an eligible flight through Expedia and register it at least 24 hours before departure. Certain airlines and flights are excluded, and the offer is subject to additional terms and conditions.

The expanded promotion applies to eligible flights booked between September 30, 2026, and December 31, 2027.

And there’s another detail worth noting: The flight must meet the qualifying delay threshold. A minor 20- or 30-minute delay won’t automatically score you a complimentary lounge pass.

What Happens if Your Airport Doesn’t Have an Eligible Lounge?

Here’s another interesting part of the promotion.

If your flight qualifies for the benefit but there’s no participating lounge available, eligible travelers may receive $20 in OneKeyCash per person instead.

OneKeyCash is Expedia’s loyalty rewards currency, which can be used toward eligible future bookings. It’s not the same as receiving $20 in cash at the airport, but it’s still a welcome perk when your travel day doesn’t go according to plan.

The benefit may also extend to eligible companions traveling on the same registered itinerary, subject to the promotion’s terms.

Expedia Is Also Adding More Travel Perks

The airport lounge expansion isn’t the only change Expedia announced.

The company is also introducing additional loyalty benefits, including discounted CLEAR+ memberships for eligible members and price-drop protection on qualifying flight bookings.

CLEAR+ is a paid airport security membership that uses biometric identity verification to help travelers move through participating airport security checkpoints more efficiently.

Meanwhile, price-drop protection is designed to give eligible travelers a little more peace of mind if airfare falls after booking.

Together, the additions reflect Expedia’s push to make its loyalty program more appealing beyond the usual hotel discounts and travel rewards.

How to Take Advantage of Expedia’s New Lounge Benefit

If you’re already a One Key Gold or Platinum member, it’s worth checking your account before your next flight.

Start by booking an eligible flight through Expedia and reviewing the offer’s registration requirements. Be sure to register your itinerary at least 24 hours before departure, since the perk isn’t something you can necessarily activate after finding out your flight is delayed.

You’ll also want to confirm that your airline and departure airport participate.

And while nobody actually wants to spend an extra 90 minutes waiting around an airport, having somewhere comfortable to retreat certainly makes the experience a little less painful.

After all, if your flight is going to be delayed anyway, you might as well enjoy a few perks while you wait.
