Free Latin dance classes are coming to downtown Edmonton this fall

31 August 20263 Mins Read

Salsa in the Square is back in Edmonton for the fifth year in a row, offering more Latin dance lessons throughout this upcoming September.

Every Tuesday in Churchill Square this next month, guests will get the opportunity to learn a type of Latin dance like salsa or bachata for free, all thanks to ETOWN SALSA. Whether you’re a novice or a beginner to the art of Latin dance, these free dance classes are going to give you the chance to learn and do something entirely new.

What to know before Salsa in the Square

When is Salsa in the Square?

This fall event series will be taking place from 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday in September.

Where is it held?

You’ll be able to join in on these free dance lessons at Churchill Square, located in the downtown Edmonton core.

What’s the best way to get there, and is there parking nearby?

Public transit, biking, and driving are all viable options for travelling to Churchill Square. If you’re taking the LRT, Churchill Station drops you directly into the square itself.

For those driving, there are several parkades available through downtown. The Stanley Milner Library Parkade and City Hall Parkade are going to be the closest to the event space.

How do the classes work?

For the first hour of the event, there will be beginner-friendly lessons held for the specific Latin dance being highlighted that day. Following the level one lesson and a level one-and-a-half lesson, participants will then be invited to mingle for the open social dancing portion of the event.

On Sept. 29, the Latin band Rumba Caliente will come as special guests, bringing live music to the Square to close out the event series.

What kinds of Latin dances will be taught?

This is the dance lesson lineup for September:

  • Sept. 1 — Merengue
  • Sept. 8 — Cumbia
  • Sept. 15 — Bachata
  • Sept. 22 — Salsa
  • Sept. 28 — Chacha and Mambo

Will the event be cancelled if it rains?

According to ETOWN SALSA, if it’s overcast, the event is subject to cancellation depending on whether any rain will affect audio equipment. A drizzle will allow the classes to continue, but a downpour will not.

How much are these classes?

These classes are entirely free to participate in. Just take yourself to Churchill Square, and get ready to start dancing.

When: Every Tuesday in September 2026
Time: 6 to 8 p.m.
Where: Sir Winston Churchill Square — 1 Sir Winston Churchill Square, Edmonton, Alta.
Cost: Free
