Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Opening Date: Everything To Know, Canada Reviews

29 July 20263 Mins Read

If you think waiting for public transport is a test of your patience, spare a thought for anyone who’s been waiting on the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island. First announced in 2006, the Frank Gehry designed modern and contemporary art museum has finally got a firm opening date after twenty years in the making. It will open its doors this year, on December 11, 2026.

Worth the wait, by the sounds of it. At 80,000 square metres, this is set to be the largest Guggenheim in the world, easily outsizing the flagship in New York and the outposts in Venice and Bilbao.

The design works with Gehry’s signature deconstructivist style, with ten sculptural cones rising up to 88 metres above a central atrium, nine of them wrapped in stainless steel mesh and one clad in onyx and glass. It’s hard not to gawp at the huge structures, but the cones are actually doing double duty as passive cooling and ventilation, shading the galleries from the Gulf heat below.

Inside the museum, you can expect 30 galleries built around a 600-piece permanent collection that Abu Dhabi has been acquiring since 2009. While the physical building was under construction, curators spent nearly two decades assembling an archive of modern and contemporary art from the 1960s onwards. Rather than repeating the usual Euro-American telling of art history, the museum organises its collection thematically, focusing on Abstraction, Popular Culture, Land, Language and Storytelling. This layout deliberately puts historically overlooked artists from the Middle East, Asia and beyond in direct conversation with the world’s most famous Western names.

It’s a bittersweet milestone, as Gehry passed away at the end of last year, meaning the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be one of the last buildings the celebrated architect saw through, alongside the Dar Al Funoon performing arts venue nearby.

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi joins an illustrious roster of museums on Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District, rounding out a cluster that already includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, arguably one of the greatest concentrations of museums anywhere on the planet.

Fancy planning a trip around it? Here’s Abu Dhabi’s full guide to Saadiyat Cultural District.
