This expertise has led to our very own list of the best bars in the world’s best cities, but we’re always happy to raise a glass to fellow tastemakers.
And this year’s World’s 50 Best Bars list has plenty worth celebrating. They’ve kindly listed all of the standout bars from around the world, from Hong Kong agave temple Coa, where tequila and mezcal take centre stage, to New York’s Double Chicken Please, where cocktails are inspired by everything from French toast to custard buns.
While the highly anticipated top 50 won’t be unveiled until a glitzy ceremony in Milan on October 7, the organisation has just dropped its extended 51–100 list for the tenth consecutive year.
Spanning 34 cities and boasting 13 brand-new entries, this year’s preview is a win for global cocktail culture. The USA leads the regional representation with five spots, including No.64 Jewel of the South in New Orleans, a Creole cottage-turned-cocktail bar with a Southern spirit, and No.70 Kumiko in Chicago, the intimate Japanese-inspired bar from bartender Julia Momose.
Europe takes 18 spots overall, from No.52 Boadas in Barcelona, a tiny cocktail institution dating back to 1933, to No.72 Panda & Sons in Edinburgh, a hidden-away speakeasy tucked behind a vintage barbershop facade. Asia follows with 16 venues, including four in Hong Kong, among them No.54 Coa, an agave-focused bar dedicated to tequila and mezcal, and No.96 The Savory Project, where cocktails get experimental with savoury and umami-rich flavours.
Meanwhile, first-time appearances from Accra, Dublin, Istanbul, San José and Shenzhen prove that the global bar scene is getting harder to pin down.
