Here’s what the City of Edmonton has in store for this Black History Month

2 February 20263 Mins Read

The beginning of February marks the beginning of Black History Month in Canada.

For this year, the City of Edmonton’s theme for 2026’s Black History Month is “Hidden Histories and Bold Futures.” The national theme is “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations – From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.”

“These themes celebrate and recognize the enduring legacy of Black Canadians and Edmontonians whose leadership, creativity, innovation and resilience have shaped our past, influenced our present and inspired future generations,” reads the City’s website.

In the spirit of recognizing and celebrating this month, the City has a long list of events and workshops for visitors to experience. Let’s jump into it, shall we?

All the things to do this Black History Month

There are loads of things to do this February, and the City has made sure of it. Celebrations even started ahead of February. The City launched LIVING PORTRAITS, a public art and augmented reality exhibition, on Jan. 31.

In City Hall, visitors can take a look at the art exhibition, on display until Jun. 16, celebrating Black artists in Edmonton through “a journey of visibility, curiosity, and connection.”

In this display, there are five curved panels with portraits of Black artists that unfold in three stages: LOOK, APPROACH, and ENGAGE. By being taken through these stages, you will learn about the important relationships to be had.

If you’re more of a film buff, we’ve got you covered. You can celebrate this month by attending The Myrrha Room’s special Black History Month screening of It Comes in Waves in partnership with The Metro Cinema on Feb. 8. This movie tells the story of a family of four after fleeing Rwanda’s horrors. Despite escaping, they face unexpected challenges and harsh realities in their pursuit of a better future.

Following this screening, there will be a conversation with director Fitch Jean and screenwriter Sammy Mohamed.

Or maybe, you might be interested in the festival at Stanley A. Milner Library on Feb. 21.

Here, at Tales and Taste, you can immerse yourself in an all-you-can-eat culinary journey inspired by Afro-diaspora flavours. Simultaneously, you can explore powerful stories rooted in history, language, and lived experience. Tickets begin at $11, and you won’t want to miss this festival.

For the full list of events going on this month for Black History Month, check out the City of Edmonton’s website online.

Celebrate this month the right way, and educate yourself on all that there is to learn. You won’t regret it.
