It’s Officially the End of an Era for Game of Thrones on HBO

14 September 20263 Mins Read

HBO has been home to some of the biggest shows on television. After shows like Sex and the City and The Sopranos put the premium station on the map, it has continued to bring audiences the best that television has to offer. And that has only continued with its franchise work. Whether it is shows like the new DC universe series Lanterns or the award-winning series, The Penguin, HBO dipping its toe into franchises has proven to be a great thing for fans (and the network). But one of its biggest shows is slowly losing its power over as the number one on the streaming platform.

When Game of Thrones premiered in 2011, it dominated the conversation both online and at the water cooler. Every week, fans would want to talk about the latest episode and even between seasons the chatter didn’t stop. Now, with an influx of content for people to watch, it seems as if the era of a Game of Thrones set series taking over the pop culture conversation. The dip in interest in House of the Dragon all but proves that. The show is successful but its very quick drop from the top of the streaming charts isn’t necessarily a great sign for the franchise.

House of the Dragon‘s third season premiered in June and aired weekly but by September, according to FlixPatrol, the show had dropped from the top 10 on the platform’s streaming charts. Currently, the show Lanterns has taken the number one spot. The shocking part is that the show itself wrapped up airing on August 9. Meaning that in a month’s time, the show dropped completely from the chart. Which means that people either quickly binged the entire season, watched it as it aired and didn’t revisit, or people just didn’t care yet to watch the season because shouldn’t there be more of a binge watching boost to the show?

Is There Just Too Much to Watch? Including in Westeros?

Even within the world of Westeros, there are multiple shows to watch within a year. The start of 2026 brought fans A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and they also got a brand new game. It means that even if someone’s favorite franchise was Game of Thrones, there’s a lot to catch up on that could stop them from repeat viewing of a season. Even so, House of the Dragon not having a long shelf life might just be down to the fact that there are simply too many shows to watch. With so many streaming platforms cranking out new shows daily, is the end of the Thrones era near? Whose to say but we do have more time in Westros still to come.
