Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer delivered a keynote at ITB Berlin 2026, urging the tourism industry to adapt to geopolitical challenges and strengthen crisis management.
Joschka Fischer, former German Foreign Minister and political adviser, addressed ITB Berlin 2026 on Tuesday, focusing on the impact of global instability on the tourism sector. Fischer stated that the era of a rules-based world order had ended, with power dynamics now dominated by the United States and China, and potentially India. He advised the tourism industry to take a proactive approach to geopolitical risks and suggested that industry leaders could play a role in diplomatic efforts.
Fischer described conflict, natural disasters, and war as persistent factors that cannot be eliminated. He emphasized that the tourism sector must recognize these realities and adapt its strategies accordingly. Fischer noted that while people will continue to travel, safety concerns will influence their choices, referencing incidents in the Gulf region where hotels have been targeted by Iranian drones.
Addressing the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, Fischer said he anticipated the escalation, citing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent visit to Washington as an indicator of imminent military action. Fischer stated that he could not predict the specific consequences of the conflict and expressed doubt about a positive resolution. Drawing on his experience in nuclear negotiations with Iran, Fischer questioned the stability of the Iranian state, highlighting internal divisions and the risk of civil war following potential regime change. He indicated that such instability could affect the broader region, including the Gulf states.
Fischer called for the tourism industry to strengthen its crisis management practices, particularly in avoiding dangerous situations. He cited the 2004 tsunami in Thailand as an example in which both the tourism sector and diplomatic services were unprepared, noting that the timing of the disaster during the Christmas holiday complicated response efforts. Fischer suggested that the industry should learn from past failures in crisis response and apply those lessons to current and future events.
