A jury in an inquiry into a deadly police station shooting in Saskatchewan is calling for tighter firearm rules.
An officer shot 19-year-old Justice Guillas to death in 2023 at the Estevan police station after the teen grabbed another officer’s gun and shot him.
An inquest report released from a jury this week says the force should beef up security and safety measures to avoid similar deaths in the future.
It says officers need more secure pistol holsters and that, when reasonable, they should place guns in lockboxes before entering spaces with detainees.
It also says staff who collect forensic information, such as fingerprints, should wear their full uniform or a bulletproof vest when dealing with those under arrest.
Guillas was brought to the police station in November 2023 after being suspected of stabbing his mother to death.
A report into his death says he grabbed an officer’s pistol from his holster and shot the officer.
The officer who was shot survived.
Another officer, fearing his own life, shot Guillas.
Saskatchewan’s police watchdog has cleared the officer of any wrongdoing.
Estevan police has said it has changed its firearms policy and now mandates officers equip themselves with more secure gun holsters.
