Live Up to Your Name on Tubi & Roku

5 May 20264 Mins Read

Sometimes a show arrives that genuinely surprises you. Not because of flashy production or a familiar premise — but because it takes something ancient and largely unfamiliar to Western audiences and builds an entire world around it. Live Up to Your Name is that show.

We spend a lot of time thinking about how great content looks and sounds in the right setup. And every once in a while, a series earns a proper recommendation — something worth settling in for on your best screen. This is one of those.

What the Show Is Actually About

Live Up to Your Name (허준) is a 2017 Korean drama series that blends historical fiction, medical drama, and time-travel romance into something genuinely hard to put down. The story follows Heo Im, widely regarded as the greatest acupuncturist in all of Joseon-era Korea, who finds himself — through a twist of fate and 400 years of time — suddenly standing in modern-day Seoul.

There, he crosses paths with Choi Yeon-kyung, a sharp, modern cardiac surgeon who has exactly zero patience for traditional healing methods. Two doctors, two completely different worlds, and one very complicated dynamic that slowly pulls them together.

What makes it work isn’t just the romance — it’s the collision of philosophies. Heo Im practices acupuncture and moxibustion with a precision and instinct that leaves modern physicians baffled. Yeon-kyung operates with the confidence of evidence-based medicine and the skepticism that comes with it. Neither is wrong. That tension carries the whole series.

Why Acupuncture at the Center of a Drama Actually Works

Most medical dramas lean on surgery, diagnosis, or emergency room stakes. Live Up to Your Name takes a different path. Acupuncture isn’t a background detail here — it’s the lens through which the entire story is told.

Heo Im’s methods are rooted in Classical Chinese Medicine, a practice that views the body as an interconnected system where balance, energy flow, and individual constitution are central to healing. Watching those principles play out against the backdrop of a modern hospital creates something genuinely thought-provoking. The show doesn’t mock traditional medicine, and it doesn’t romanticize it either. It treats it with the same seriousness it gives to surgical procedures.

For viewers who’ve never thought much about acupuncture or moxibustion before, this is the kind of storytelling that makes those ideas feel real — not abstract, not fringe. There’s a reason audiences across North America have responded to it the way they have.

The series ran for one season, 16 episodes total, and holds a 7.9 on IMDb. Lead actors Kim Nam-gil and Kim Ah-jung carry it with a chemistry that keeps the slower moments just as engaging as the dramatic ones.

Where to Watch It

Live Up to Your Name is available on several platforms, which makes it easy to pick up however you prefer to watch:

  • Tubi — Free with ads, no subscription required
  • The Roku Channel — Free with ads, available directly on Roku devices
  • Apple TV — Available on demand
  • Netflix — Available in select regions

If you’ve got a dedicated setup at home, this one earns it. The period sequences in Joseon-era Korea are visually rich — the kind of content that rewards a larger screen and proper audio.

A Side Note Worth Mentioning

If the show sparks genuine curiosity about acupuncture — and for many viewers, it does — it’s worth knowing that the tradition depicted on screen is very much alive and practiced today. Tao Space is a registered acupuncture clinic offering acupuncture in Niagara Falls rooted in the same Classical Chinese Medicine philosophy at the heart of this drama. It’s not something most people stumble across — but for anyone who watches Live Up to Your Name and finds themselves wanting to understand more, it’s a meaningful place to start.

The Right Show Deserves the Right Setup

There’s something about a well-crafted Korean drama — the pacing, the visual storytelling, the score — that genuinely benefits from being watched the way it was meant to be seen. Not on a laptop, not with tinny built-in speakers.

If you’ve been thinking about improving the way you experience content at home, that’s exactly where Toronto Home Theater comes in. From TV installation to full home theater design across Toronto and the GTA, every setup is built around your space, your viewing habits, and what you actually want out of the experience.
