Music Legend Who Shaped Decades of No. 1 Hits Says ‘Nobody Can Make a Record Better Than Me’

18 February 20263 Mins Read

Nile Rodgers is known for his collaborations with everyone from David Bowie to Beyoncé, but the legendary musician and producer has never felt intimidated by anyone he has worked with.

Speaking with Vulture in a February 2026 interview, Rodgers, 73, said his most intimidating collaborator was “nobody.”

“No way, man,” he said. “If I ever believed that it would mean I’m walking into the studio and thinking, ‘You can make a record better than me.’ And nobody can make a record better than me.”

“Please don’t take this in an egotistical way,” Rodgers added. “Who have I made records with? Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, the London Symphony Orchestra. I’m here to have fun. I’m here to become part of your band.”

He explained that his goal has always been to make artists know that he has “their best interests at heart.” “That’s all I care about,” Rodgers added.

Rodgers, who co-founded the New York-based disco band Chic in 1972, is one of the most prolific and influential songwriters and producers in modern music history. His Chic songs “Le Freak” and “Good Times” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978 and 1979, respectively. He also wrote and/or produced massive hits for Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Madonna, David Bowie, and many more artists.

Nile Rodgers’ biggest hits

Rodgers is behind so many hit songs that it’s almost impossible to pick a favorite. He looked back on his music catalog in a 2021 interview posted  by Radio X, where he noted that “Le Freak“ remains “the biggest song in the history of Atlantic Records to this very day.”

Rodgers also humbly credited his song “Good Times” as the “unofficial beginning of hip-hop,” before addressing another of his biggest songs.

“’We Are Family’ is, in a unique way, the most successful single song that the Chic organization has ever produced,” he said. “When I wrote ‘We are Family,’ I got the concept of the song years before I met [Chic co-founder] Bernard Edwards and years before I met Sister Sledge … ‘We Are Family’ has now sort of dwarfed every song that I’ve ever written. Even though ‘Le Freak’ is by far the biggest selling single, ‘We Are Family,’ because of its usages in other films and video games, and things like that, is, believe it or not, that one song is now one quarter of my publishing income.”

Rodgers also called Madonna’s Like a Virgin album, which he produced, “a phenomenon.”

One collab gone wrong

In the Vulture interview, Rodgers looked back fondly on his past collaborations, including Bowie’s Let’s Dance album, which he completed in just two days. He revealed that he spent time with Bowie in libraries to come up with artistic ideas and to get to know him through his taste in art. He also connected with the singer via an album exchange.

“I actually tried this once with John Mayer, and it went totally sour,”  Rodgers noted. “He turned me onto his favorite record, which was Coldplay’s first album, Parachutes. I thought it was cool, but I gave him the Rolling Stones’ Their Satanic Majesties Request, which I think is the most underrated rock and roll album of all time.”

The album exchange failed—and the collab never came to fruition.

“It didn’t work with John,” Rodgers noted. “Those first two days we got along like brothers, but then after we did the album thing, it was like, ‘This isn’t happening.’”
