New Netflix Alan Ritchson action movie looks like Predator meets Metal Gear

4 February 20262 Mins Read

Netflix’s next big action movie from director Patrick Hughes drops an elite team of soldiers into a Predator-style jungle, where they’re hunted by a Terminator-like mechanical monster with a design that looks just like Metal Gear. Sign me up. The protagonist, our would-be Solid Snake (or Naked, if you’re nasty) in this case, is none other than Jack Reacher himself, Alan Ritchson.

The trailer starts with all the trademarks of Metal Gear: a soldierwaking up under the gray skies in a blanket of tall grass, the constant view of the back of your hero’s head, and a scene of fellow men in a fighting circle, practicing close-quarters combat. Ritchson’s character finds himself at a boot camp looking for a chance to join the U.S. Army Rangers, and as part of the final stage of selection, he and his elite team’s training exercise gets real. Once they’re deep in the jungle, they stumble upon and accidentally activate a foreign machine built purely for destruction, realizing their mock exam has become a fight for survival.

The bipedal monstrosity can fire lasers, bullets, and can locate organics with a blue beam that scans for life with the sound of a buzzsaw. The team eventually ends up stranded with no comms, flares, or firearms, meaning Ritchson and company are going to have to MacGyver their way out of this situation.

Aside from sharing its name with Netflix’s 2017 original film, War Machine actually looks pretty exciting. Director Patrick Hughes is a capable action guy, having previously helmed The Expendables 3 and The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Outside the Metal Gear of it all, the film looks like a blend of two of the best sci-fi action films ever made, three if you think the titular machine looks more like ED-209 from the original RoboCop.

War Machine is slated to premiere on Netflix March 6.
