Fall is a magical time to visit one of B.C.’s many hot springs, but Liard River Hot Springs Park deserves to be at the top of your road trip list. What is so special about these hot springs?
Considered one of B.C.’s top natural marvels and of national ecological significance, the hot springs are situated in the middle of a breathtaking forest, so you get to soak in its warm mineral waters while surrounded by towering trees.
When compared to other hot springs like Ainsworth and Fairmont (both of which are resort-style), Liard River offers visitors the chance to fully immerse themselves in nature during their experience.
How hot is the water?
The Alpha Pool ranges from 42°C to 52°C, so you’re all but guaranteed to warm up pretty quickly. There’s also a shallow end for children to enjoy, and beaches surrounding the pools.
How do I get to the hot springs from the park entrance?
The hot springs complex awaits at the end of a boardwalk trail, which winds through diverse plant species and a warm water swamp, according to BC Parks.
Once you arrive at the hot springs, you can shed your layers in the change house.
Are there any washroom facilities?
Guests of the hot springs can access a composting toilet during their visit.
What time of year are the hot springs open?
The provincial park is open year-round, and so are the hot springs.
The park gates are currently open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, though guests must exit the pools by 10:30 p.m.
How much does it cost to visit?
Between May 1 and Thanksgiving, there is a day-use fee of $5 per adult, $3 per child, and $10 per family, payable via cash, credit, or debit at the staffed gatehouse. If you live nearby or plan on visiting multiple times per year, it may be worth it to opt for the annual pass, which costs just $10 per adult or $20 per family.
According to BC Parks, 75 per cent of these funds go toward increasing park services and staff presence, as well as covering the park’s rising maintenance costs.
Visitors are asked to stay on the boardwalk at all times during their walk to the hot springs so as not to disturb the surrounding sensitive habitats.
