While she has rarely spoken about it in public or in interview, One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush is finally opening up about her brief relationship to costar Chad Michael Murray back in the 2000s.
According to People magazine, the 44-year-old Bush has gone into some detail about her ill-fated romance with Murray in her new memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine. Meeting on the set of One Tree Hill, the couple began dating in 2003, becoming engaged in 2004, and marrying in 2005, when Murray was 23 and Bush was 22.
In discussing how their relationship began, Bush said that she and Murray bonded on the set of One Tree Hill during the show’s first season, with Murray opening up to her about his childhood and past struggles.
At the time, Bush said that her and Murray’s co-star, Hilarie Burton, had advised her against pursuing a relationship with Murray, but that she chose to continue the romance anyway, eventually resulting in her and Burton drifting apart.
As their relationship developed, however, Bush alleged that she found herself being occupied more and more by Murray’s “insecurity, the possessiveness and the controlling demands,” paving the way to “more frequent arguments” between the two.
As they attempted to settle into marriage, Bush said that she found herself being confronted more and more frequently with allegations on infidelity on Murray’s part. Things got so bad, Bush wrote, she eventually asked Murray not to participate in celebrating her 23rd birthday.
“I couldn’t do another fight or another humiliating show of him marking his territory with my coworkers,” she wrote.
Reflecting on the relationship and the eventual end of her marriage to Murray, Bush tactfully responded that she tried to discuss the romance as little as possible.
“It’s the thing I never want to speak about because do you want to talk about the dumb thing you did when you were a senior in college, which is how old I was?” she told People.
