To bring us back to the start, since we’re teasing, can you tease anything about re-teaming for Curry Barker’s next film, Anything but Ghosts?

I won’t say too much yet, but I will say this: Curry is so innately attuned to the entertainment portion of the horror genre, and to making it multidimensional. Anyone who’s familiar with That’s a Bad Idea, his comedy work with Cooper Tomlinson, that audience will have a bit of a hint of just what delight and ride this movie is going to be. It’s important to remember that Obsession is wildly disturbing, but also it is entertaining, and so expect more of that because Curry is tapped into making an entertaining night at the movies in an even bigger way than Obsession had the canvas to do. Ghosts will show the broad dimension that Curry has. I think he’s going to be around for a very long time doing all sorts of incredible work, and this is just that next step forward in his career as a major, major voice for a long time to come.

I’m going to give myself a little credit here: a few years back, I got on stage at CinemaCon—while the industry was still at a moment in time where the whole world was feeling anxiety around theatrical moviegoing—and I said, “We are entering a new golden age of cinema.” Afterwards, we do a little cocktail thing, and have press and exhibitors there, and the number of people who came up to me were like, “You couldn’t possibly mean that, right? You’re just playing cheerleader.” But I do mean it. Look at what is happening right now: original visions, original movies, original voices. We are not just stuck in only IP, only the kind of recycled mythologies like a few years ago. It’s starting to punch through, and we’re going into a wave where that’s going to be the norm, and it’s going to be one of the most incredible periods of cinema creation that we’ve ever known. At the moment, the proof is in that footing of what is working. What’s taking hold is so fresh and unique, and so driven by artistry and voice and vision and vision. I can’t wait for the next decade of movies we’re all going to be watching together, because I think there’s some real special stuff coming down the pipe that we don’t even know about yet.

Also, members really want an Oscar nomination for Inde Navarrette—hopefully, Amy Madigan opened that door for everyone going forward…

So do we. And more, by the way. We think that Curry’s film has a lot to offer!
