Ring has debuted a new version of its smart doorbell camera that’s designed to be easily installed as a replacement for a door’s peephole without drilling or running wires. The Peephole Cam 2K is a replacement for the brand’s Door View Cam that first debuted in 2019 and, alongside a sleeker design, it features a bump from 1080P to 2K video recording, some tracking upgrades, and a cheaper price. It’s available for preorder now for $99.99 with shipping expected later this month.
As with previous models, the Peephole Cam 2K is divided into two halves that connect to each other through your door’s peephole. On the outside there’s a camera, doorbell, speaker, and microphone, while inside are additional electronics including a removable battery good for an estimated 120 days of use between charges. But there’s no preview screen on the inside, so to check who’s at your door you’ll need to reach for your phone or a compatible smart display.
That inconvenience is potentially outweighed by being able to see and respond to whoever’s at your door from anywhere, even when you’re not at home. The Peephole Cam 2K will also deliver real-time motion alerts with brief descriptions of what its camera is seeing, and you can limit its motion detection to specific regions of its wide-angle 140-degree field-of-view so that passing cars, for example, don’t trigger alerts. However, features like being able to review recorded events for up to 180 days and specific alerts for detected packages are only available with an additional Ring Protect plan.
