The Met Gala is one of Hollywood’s most highly anticipated evenings – and the 2026 event is finally here. People from all over the world are gearing up to watch the biggest stars walk the red carpet, including us Canadians. We have all the details, including where to watch in Canada and this year’s theme.

What is the Met Gala?

Playfully known as fashion’s biggest night, The Met Gala takes place on the first Monday of May every year and has been held since 1948. 

The event is organized by Vogue, and according to the outlet, “The Met Gala is a charity event and fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It has traditionally been timed to mark the opening of the department’s spring fashion exhibition.”  

The Met Gala typically raises eye-watering amounts of money, with the 2025 gala bringing in the biggest sum in the event’s history: $31 million. 

Every year, hand-selected co-chairs help put together the night. Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has chaired or co-chaired the Met Gala since the early 90s, with stars like Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams joining her in 2026.

When is the 2026 Met Gala?

The 2026 Met Gala red carpet kicks off on Monday, May 4 and 6 p.m. EST (3 p.m. PST). 

The livestreams and coverage for the event will also begin at 6 p.m. EST (3 p.m. PST). 

How to watch the 2026 Met Gala in Canada

In Canada, there are a few ways you can catch all the action. 

Online, the Met Gala will be streamed exclusively by Vogue on its website, YouTube channel and TikTok page. 

E! is also providing Met Gala coverage, streaming on its website, YouTube channel, and social media channels.

If you have cable, the E! Network will have full coverage of the Met Gala as well.  

What is the 2026 Met Gala theme? 

At each Met Gala, attendees are asked to dress according to a specific theme and dress code.  

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the Costume Institute’s spring 2026 exhibition, Costume Art, as the Met Gala’s 2026 theme. Accompanying the theme is the dress code – Fashion is Art. So, I’m sure we can expect to see some very creative, artist-inspired looks.

“The show—set to inaugurate the Met’s new, nearly 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries—will consider depictions of the dressed body from across the Met’s curatorial departments, pairing garments with art objects spanning some 5,000 years,” Vogue explains.
