The 6 Healthiest Snacks To Buy at Dollar Tree Right Now, According to a Dietitian

7 June 20269 Mins Read

Finding healthy snacks can feel challenging no matter where you shop. Grocery stores often dedicate entire aisles to chips, cookies, candy and other ultra-processed options, while nutritious choices can be harder to spot among the endless packaging and marketing claims. For shoppers on a budget, the challenge can seem even greater.

Many people assume eating well requires frequent trips to specialty grocery stores or spending significantly more money on healthier products. The reality is that healthy snacks can be found almost anywhere, including discount retailers like Dollar Tree. While the store is known for its low prices and convenient selection, it also carries several nutrient-dense snacks that can support a balanced diet when chosen carefully. The key is knowing what to look for and understanding how to read nutrition labels rather than relying on front-of-package marketing.

To help identify the healthiest snacks at Dollar Tree right now, I spoke with a fellow registered dietitian about what makes a snack nutritious and which products stand out from the crowd. Her advice highlights an important truth—healthy eating isn’t about perfection or spending more money. It’s about choosing foods that provide meaningful nutrition and help keep you satisfied between meals.

This registered dietitian nutritionist tells Parade that shoppers should focus less on flashy health claims and more on nutrient density. A good snack can help bridge the gap between meals, prevent excessive hunger and contribute important nutrients to your overall diet. Whether you’re shopping at a traditional supermarket, a warehouse club or your local Dollar Tree, those principles remain the same.

What Is the Healthiest Snack at Dollar Tree?

When asked what nutritional qualities she looks for in a healthy snack, Struik said she prioritizes nutrient density above all else.

“I personally look at what I would consider a good nutrient-dense profile,” she tells Parade. “For me, this means fiber content, protein and healthy fats, while limiting sodium and added sugars.”

As for the single healthiest snack currently available at Dollar Tree, she points to nuts. “There are so many great options,” she says. “I personally love that they carry Wonderful Pistachios. These are nutrient-dense powerhouses carrying polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats to lower LDL cholesterol.”

She adds that the nuts provide several important benefits in one package. “They also contain protein and fiber to help keep you feeling fuller for longer periods. One of the goals of snacking is always to help curb your hunger.”

Struik notes that many fruit-based snacks can be nutritious, but they may not provide enough staying power on their own.

“Something more fruit-based will likely not have protein or healthy fats. I always like to pair it with another snack that has these to make sure I stay full,” she explains. Nut butter is a great snack pairing for fruit because it contains heart-healthy fats with a bit of protein to boot.

3 Tips for Finding Healthy Snacks at Dollar Tree

Struik shares her top tricks to shopping the snack aisle at Dollar Tree like a pro.

1. Choose a snack with fiber

While shopping at Dollar Tree, Struik recommends paying close attention to both nutrition labels and ingredient lists. “I really push fiber intake,” she says. “I think that’s one area that we could all do better in. Incorporating fiber into your snacks will make sure you hit your daily fiber goals.”

Instead of granola bars, she recommends choosing less processed alternatives, explaining, “You are much better off grabbing alternatives here, such as the fruit purees or freeze-dried fruit snacks. Instead of granola bars, look at different nut or seed mixes, or protein bars, as these will keep you fuller than a granola bar with lots of added sugars.”

2. Limit snacks with added sugar

She also encourages shoppers to keep an eye on sugar content. “I also like to draw attention to added sugars. They can be hiding in many of our prepackaged snacks, so make sure to look at your nutrition label and ingredient list,” she says.

Some products that appear healthy at first glance may not be the best choices nutritionally when you actually take a closer look. “Anything usually labeled a ‘fruit snack’ or a ‘granola bar’ tends to always have tons of added sugars,” she says. Instead, she recommends choosing alternatives such as fruit purees or freeze-dried fruit snacks.

3. Read nutrition labels

For shoppers trying to stretch their food budget, careful label reading is especially important. “Don’t judge a book by its cover, and don’t buy it without reading the nutrition label,” she says. “You may find a snack that leads you to believe it’s a good choice by branding alone, but without reading the label, it’s hard to make that choice.”

She says trail mix is one example of a food you should read the nutrition label of before purchasing, sharing, “For example, trail mixes can be a great choice, but without reading the label, you may purchase one that has a very high amount of added sugar.”

6 Healthiest Dollar Tree Snacks, According to a Dietitian

Here, Struik breaks down the six healthiest Dollar Tree snacks she recommends looking for on your next trip.

1. Wonderful Pistachios, Roasted & Salted

Dollar Tree

Struik’s top pick earns high marks for its combination of heart-healthy fats, protein and fiber. These nutrients work together to promote fullness and provide sustained energy between meals.

The Roasted & Salted variety contains 120 calories per 0.75-ounce package and delivers 9 grams of heart-healthy fats, 2 grams of fiber, and 5 grams of protein, with no added sugar.

Priced at just $1.25 per single-serving package, the snack comes in several shelled varieties, including Roasted & Salted, Sea Salt & Pepper, Chili Roasted, Honey Roasted and Sea Salt & Vinegar. You can also choose from shell-on options such as Roasted & Salted and Salt & Pepper.

2. So Natural Freeze Dried Fruits

Dollar Tree

According to Struik, these are “a great alternative to fresh fruit” and “are really good dipped in your favorite nut butter.” Pairing freeze-dried fruit with nut butter adds protein and healthy fats to create a more balanced snack.

Dollar Tree offers three varieties of freeze-dried fruit, including strawberry, apple and mixed fruit, with each 0.6-ounce vegan and gluten-free package clocking in at only 60 calories with 1 gram of fiber—and endless crunching.

3. Angie’s Boom Chicka Pop White Cheddar Popcorn

Dollar Tree

Popcorn can be an excellent whole-grain snack choice when prepared with reasonable ingredients. Struik recommends this option because it’s “a nice savory snack with good fiber content.”

Each 1.5-ounce individual bag has just 240 calories, 3 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein, with that classic cheesy popcorn flavor that hits the right savory notes every single time.

4. SkinnyPop Original Popcorn

Dollar Tree

Another popcorn favorite, SkinnyPop offers a simple ingredient list and satisfying crunch. It provides a fiber-rich snack while remaining relatively light.

This fan-favorite popcorn is made with just popcorn kernels, oil and salt, and it provides 3 grams of fiber with no added sugar per 1-ounce serving.

5. So Natural Strawberry Banana Fruit Puree

Dollar Tree

Fruit purees can be a convenient way to enjoy fruit while on the go. Struik calls this “another great alternative to fresh fruit” and notes that it’s especially “kid-friendly.”

With minimal ingredients and added sugar, this snack comes in at only 45 calories and is an easy way to get kids (and adults) to eat more fruit during busy, hectic days when fresh or frozen fruit just isn’t an option.

6. Brunswick Chicken Salad With Crackers

Dollar Tree

For those craving something savory, this option offers a balance of protein and fats that may help keep hunger at bay longer than carbohydrate-heavy snacks. The buffalo chicken and tuna versions sold at some Dollar Tree locations earn similar praise.

Struik describes both the chicken and tuna salad kits as “another great savory snack option with a good nutrient profile of healthy fats and protein.” Each kit offers 8 grams of protein, which isn’t always easy to find in a shelf-stable snack.

The Bottom Line

Healthy snacking doesn’t require a premium grocery budget. As Struik says, nutrient-dense options can be found at stores like Dollar Tree when shoppers know what to look for among the snack aisle. Prioritizing fiber, protein and healthy fats while limiting added sugars can help you build a smarter snack cart without overspending.

Her final message is simple but valuable—read the nutrition label before you buy. A few extra seconds spent checking ingredients and nutrition facts can help you identify the products that truly support your health goals while staying within your budget.
