Travel Tech’s Pay Divide Widens As Tech-first Companies Outbid Hospitality Groups

In Brief: New salary benchmarks indicate that US travel platforms pay engineers up to 35% more than hospitality companies, while senior technology roles command base salaries of up to $320,000.

Travel technology companies are paying a premium for engineering, product and data expertise, but new salary benchmarks point to a divided employment market in which tech-first platforms substantially outpay traditional hospitality groups.

US companies such as Airbnb, Navan and Priceline pay engineering staff between 25% and 35% more than hospitality groups offering comparable roles, according to the Travel Tech Salary Guide 2026 published by specialist recruiter Travel Tech Talent.

The report places US base salaries for senior software engineers at between $150,000 and $190,000. Lead and staff engineers can earn $185,000 to $225,000, while compensation for a vice-president of engineering or chief technology officer ranges from $240,000 to $320,000 before bonuses or equity.

The findings suggest that competition for technical talent is creating separate pay tiers within the travel sector. Digital platforms compete with the broader technology industry for engineers and product specialists, while hotel groups and other established travel businesses often recruit within more traditional hospitality compensation structures.

Travel Tech Talent said salary filings from major US travel companies showed a median engineering pay range of $149,000 to $205,000. By comparison, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a national median of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025.

The official data also show that the mean annual wage for US software developers reached $148,100, illustrating the relatively high baseline against which travel companies must compete. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures cover the economy as a whole rather than travel technology specifically.

Product and data leaders attract top salaries

The premium extends beyond software engineering.

US product managers receive base salaries of between $130,000 and $165,000, according to the guide, rising to $190,000 to $240,000 for a head of product. Vice presidents of product and chief product officers earn between $240,000 and $320,000.

Data engineers and data scientists earn between $110,000 and $145,000 at the mid-level and between $145,000 and $180,000 in senior positions. At the top of the function, a vice president of data or chief data officer can earn a base salary of $230,000 to $300,000.

Those roles have become increasingly important as travel companies invest in dynamic pricing, personalization, demand forecasting and AI-assisted search. Airlines, accommodation providers and booking platforms all need specialists capable of turning large volumes of customer and operational data into commercial products.

The salary bands nevertheless describe base pay only. Bonuses, stock awards and other incentives—which can account for a substantial share of senior compensation at publicly listed and venture-backed technology companies—are excluded.

London maintains a sizable technology premium

A similar, although lower-paid, hierarchy is visible in the UK.

The guide places base salaries for mid-level travel-tech software engineers at £55,000 to £75,000 and senior engineers at £75,000 to £95,000. Heads of engineering receive between £100,000 and £130,000, while a vice-president of engineering or CTO can earn £130,000 to £180,000.

Travel Tech Talent calculated that software development professionals in London earned a median of £75,296, approximately 32% above the UK-wide figure of £56,914 reported in provisional 2025 data from the Office for National Statistics.

The guide’s UK ranges are weighted toward London, meaning they should not be treated as national averages.

Product leadership is among the highest-paid UK functions, with heads of product earning £100,000 to £135,000 and chief product officers earning £140,000 to £190,000.

Commercial experience carries its own premium

The report also indicates strong demand for employees who combine technology knowledge with established relationships across the travel industry.

US regional sales directors receive base salaries of $95,000 to $130,000, while vice-presidents of sales earn between $170,000 and $230,000. Chief revenue officers can command $220,000 to $300,000.

In the UK, the corresponding ranges are £55,000 to £90,000 for regional directors, £110,000 to £150,000 for vice-presidents of sales, and £140,000 to £190,000 for chief revenue officers.

Actual earnings for commercial staff may be significantly higher because the figures exclude commission. The guide estimates that on-target earnings for a successful account executive commonly range from 1.5 to 2 times base salary, depending on the commission model.

Customer success is also evolving from a support function into a revenue-related discipline as more travel suppliers adopt subscription and platform products. US heads of customer success earn an estimated $130,000 to $170,000 in base pay, while chief customer officers receive as much as $280,000.

A benchmark rather than a comprehensive pay survey

Travel Tech Talent compiled the guide using UK and US government wage statistics, US Department of Labor salary disclosures and information from its own recruitment mandates. The company says it has filled more than 5,000 vacancies over eight years in travel and hospitality technology.

The evidence differs by role. Some engineering and data ranges rest primarily on government statistics, while most executive, product and customer-success estimates rely more heavily on the recruiter’s proprietary market information.

The figures consequently offer a directional benchmark rather than a comprehensive census of travel-tech compensation. They do not break salaries down by company size, funding stage, location within each country or remote-working policy—all factors that can materially affect an offer.

Even with those limitations, the guide highlights the growing cost of building travel technology. Companies are no longer competing only with their closest rivals for staff. They are bidding against the wider software, data and AI markets—and the best-funded travel platforms appear increasingly willing to pay accordingly.
