The Calgary Group Chat: What your friends are talking about this week (Sept. 1)

1 September 20263 Mins Read

Welcome to the Calgary Group Chat. We’re back with another week of things you need to know around the city, and trust us, there’s a lot to catch you up on. We’re rounding up what’s happening around Calgary, from the things everyone is talking about to a few little gems you might have missed. Basically, if it’s happening in the city, we’re bringing it to the group chat. So, let’s get into it.

The Canada Strong Pass is available for one more week

If you’ve been wanting to squeeze in a few more adventures before summer is officially over, you’ve only got a few more days to take advantage of the Canada Strong Pass. The pass has been giving Canadians free admission and discounts at participating Parks Canada sites and other attractions across the country, but Sept. 7, 2026, is the last day it’s in effect. Starting on Sept. 8, regular admission and other fees will return, so now is the time to make the most of the free admission while you still can.

Jimmy John’s just opened its first Calgary location

The wait is over. Jimmy John’s has officially opened its first Calgary location in the University District, so you can finally try the chain’s famous sandwiches without leaving the city. You can find the new spot at 41419 University Ave. NW, Calgary, Alta, and it’s open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Fall activities are officially making their way back to the city

The pumpkin patches and spooky season favourites are starting to pop up around Calgary, so it’s time to start making those fall plans. Halloweekends at Calaway Park kicks off on Sept. 5 and will transform the park into a family-friendly Halloween experience with spooky decorations, parades, and themed entertainment. Pumpkins After Dark also returns later this year, bringing more than 10,000 hand-carved pumpkins to Canada Olympic Park.

A Dolly Parton Tribute concert is coming to Calgary

Dolly Parton’s music is getting the symphony treatment in Calgary this September, with a special concert celebrating the late country legend’s incredible career. Dolly Parton’s Threads: My Songs in Symphony is coming to the Jack Singer Concert Hall on Friday, Sept. 11, featuring the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra alongside guest vocalists and musicians.

The show will bring some of Parton’s biggest hits to life, including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colours,” and “I Will Always Love You,” with Parton appearing on screen throughout the performance.

The Rockies are already trying to summon winter

While we’ve been trying to squeeze out every last drop of summer here in Calgary, the Rockies apparently have other plans. Banff’s Sunshine Village got a little taste of winter over the weekend, with snow making an appearance on the mountain on Aug. 30, 2026. It may be summer down here, but the mountains are already reminding us that sweater weather, ski season and all things snowy aren’t that far away.

And that’s your Calgary Group Chat catch-up for the week! There’s still time to squeeze in a few summer adventures, but fall is already creeping in, so consider this your sign to make the most of the next few weeks.

We’ll be back next week with another round of updates for you!
