Cue Madonna’s “Vogue” because Miranda Priestly is back! Yes, Meryl Streep again straps into the designer shoes of the fashion world’s most fearsome editrix in the long-awaited movie event The Devil Wears Prada 2. The sequel finds the head of Runway magazine—joined by returning characters Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), Nigel Kipling (Stanley Tucci) and Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt)—reluctantly navigating an ever-changing media landscape, one dominated by social-media virality, never-ending budget cuts and power-hungry tech bros.
Since leaving Runway, Andy has spent the past two decades building her career as a critically acclaimed investigative journalist. But when she and her newspaper team are hit with mass layoffs, Andy unexpectedly gets pulled back into the Runway vortex, much to Miranda’s chagrin. She also reunites with Blunt’s sidesplitting scene-stealer Emily—now a high-powered senior executive at Dior—and they’ll have to work together to keep those glossy pages of Runway filled and published.
With The Devil Wears Prada 2’s release date coming on Friday, May 1, here’s everything that happens to Miranda, Andy, Emily, Nigel and everyone else you know and love (and maybe fear) in the fashion-focused sequel.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Ending Explained
Who betrays Miranda in The Devil Wears Prada 2?
After Runway chairman Ira Ravitz (Tibor Feldman) dies, his son Jay (B.J. Novak) takes over and wants to gut the place, threatening major staff cuts and slashing the budget on the luxury publication. (Seriously, Miranda Priestly flying in coach? We never thought we’d see the day!) Desperate to save the integrity of the magazine and its team, Andy enlists the help of Emily and her billionaire boyfriend Benji Barnes (Justin Theroux) to come in as a white knight and buy the publication.
When Benji agrees, the women excitedly bring the news to Miranda, only for her to reveal the real motive behind Emily’s seemingly altruistic aid: She wants Benji to buy out the magazine from under Miranda so that she herself can run it, a vengeful act after Miranda pushed her out of Runway and over to Dior all those years ago. Devastated by Emily’s deception, Miranda snaps at her former assistant: “You’re not a visionary, you’re a vendor.” Way harsh, Tai.

What happens to Stanley Tucci’s Nigel in The Devil Wears Prada 2?
Of course, despite all that behind-the-scenes drama, the fashion show must go on. However, while in Milan with Andy, Nigel and the Runway team, Miranda has to rush away from a key event due to the whole Emily fiasco, despite having to give an important speech. With a gentle nudge from Andy—who reminds the editor that maybe she’s been taking advantage of her right-hand man for decades—Miranda asks Nigel to fill in for her on Runway’s behalf, giving a much-deserved global spotlight to the publication’s trusty art director. Consider it penance for Miranda’s ruthless betrayal of Nigel back in the first film!
Further proving his professional bona fides, it’s later revealed that it was Nigel all along who had originally texted Ira Ravitz to bring Andy back into the Runway fold to help right the magazine’s wrongs.

Does Andy break up with her boyfriend in The Devil Wears Prada 2?
Emily’s deception carries into Andy’s personal life—especially when it comes to her newfound romance with dashing Aussie contractor Peter, played by Patrick Brammall. (Andy’s ex Nate—portrayed by Adrian Grenier in the first movie—is nowhere to be seen in the sequel.) While the couple decides to take a bit of a breather during Andy’s Italy trip with Runway, she returns committed to making their relationship work, telling him that she wants to be “imperfect together.”

Does Emily take over ‘Runway’ in The Devil Wears Prada 2?
No. While the fashion-loving Brit is busy dreaming up cover ideas for the future Runway, Miranda and Andy are scheming behind the scenes to track down an alternate buyer to acquire the magazine from Jay Ravitz. The women find their answer in the form of Sasha Barnes (Lucy Liu), Benji’s ex-wife and a billionaire philanthropist whom Andy profiled in a viral article earlier in the film.
With her editor-in-chief dreams dashed, Emily later meets up with Andy for lunch to apologize for blindsiding her. She reveals that Benji broke up with her (the bleach-blonde dye job should have been a clue) and she’s now working at Coach, a considerably less chic post than the Dior gig. But she also shares that she does want to be friends with Andy, who reminds her that she’s iconic and doesn’t need a man to do something big with her life.

Does Miranda fire Andy from ‘Runway’?
No, with Runway officially saved, Miranda decides to keep Andy on to help oversee things at the magazine. She also gives her permission to continue with the book proposal she’s been secretly discussing with her publishing friend Tessa (Rachel Bloom), a potential $350,000 deal for a tell-all on Miranda. Priestly tells her to publish it all, especially the juicy parts, because people “should know there’s a cost” to the kind of career she’s built for herself.

Will there be a Devil Wears Prada 3?
There has been no announcement about a third installment in The Devil Wears Prada franchise, but the cast has publicly expressed interest in keeping the Runway story going.
During an April 20 appearance on Andy Cohen’s radio show—SiriusXM’s Radio Andy—Streep, Hathaway, Blunt and Tucci discussed a possible third film in “5, 10, 15 years.” Blunt quipped to Tucci—who’s also her brother-in-law—“Don’t say ‘I’ll be dead,’ you mustn’t make that joke!” He cheekily replied, “I’ll be infirmed.”
That same day, Blunt told E! Newsthat she wished her character and Nigel had more overlap onscreen in The Devil Wears Prada 2. “Stan and I were so angry that they didn’t give us more to do together,” she shared. “If we do another one, they better have us joined at the hip.”
