The Mighty Nein season 2 first look shows off Fjord’s dark pact

The last few episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina were just released, but Critical Role fans won’t have to wait long to enjoy more of the gaming group’s animated adventures. Season 2 of The Mighty Nein is in the works, and Prime Video revealed a first look during a panel at Annecy Festival on June 24.

The minute-long clip shows the party fighting to save the city of Nicodranas from a goblin raid. They seem to try to persuade the goblins not to fight, but one goblin bitterly says “the only good goblin is a dead goblin,” a phrase that takes aim at the classic murder hobo-style of Dungeons & Dragons adventurers who tend to want to kill as many monsters as possible.

The fight that ensues lets all the members of the party show off. Jester (Laura Bailey) whacks goblins with her lollipop spiritual weapon while Beauregard Lionett (Marisha Ray) shows off her ability to snatch arrows and throw them back at her foes. The Warlock Paladin Fjord (Travis Willingham) demonstrates the sway his pact has over him as he hears a voice driving him to “consume” during the fight. He throttles a goblin and drains all of its life, leaving behind a withered husk as Fjord’s eyes turn dark.

Jester is bitter about not getting to fight as much as she uses her cleric powers to heal an injured child, complaining that the villagers should have better situational awareness to avoid getting hurt. The child’s name is Sam, in honor of The Mighty Nein executive producer and star Sam Riegel, and his design is based on a childhood picture of Riegel. He’s even voiced by Riegel’s own son.

Prime Video hasn’t shared a release date for the new season of Mighty Nein yet, but has confirmed that The Legend of Vox Machina will return for season 5. Riegel also teased that he is in talks with Prime Video for more series, possibly branching out from D&D-inspired fantasy to include science fiction.
