The popular Hallmark Channel twisty time-bending family drama came to a close Sunday night after four seasons of clothes drenching jumps into the pond sending viewers back the 1800s, the 1920s, and from the 1960s through to the present day. The series finale “Ahead by a Century” tied to together most, if not all, the mysteries between the Landrys and the Augustines and we saw happy futures for our main characters.
Here are some of the key points we learned from the finale and The Way Home series finale ending explained.

We finally learned who Casey Goodwin is
Hallmark Media
Ponderers have been pondering exactly how Casey Goodwin (Vaughn Murrae) was related to the Landrys. The seemingly obviously explanation was that she was Alice’s daughter from the future which meant Alice was going to marry a Goodwin, but Alice was dating Noah (Alexander Eling) not Max (Dale Whibley). It’s when Jacob jokes with Alice that he wishes he had a family ring to propose to Abby (Holly Deveaux) with and Alice offers him the ring she has, both she and Jacob have that lightbulb moment and realize Casey is Jacob’s daughter from the future! We get glimpses of how Casey was there for all of her parents’ special moments and everything clicks.
Fern Says Goodbye to Cliff

Hallmark Media
Present-day Fern’s (Jill Frappier) mental state can be traced back to 1926 New Year’s Eve when the mine explosion happened and she lost her one true love, Cliff (Dan Jeannotte). Fern’s (Bianca Melchior) hope was to run away with Cliff and live her happy ending. It turns out she was pregnant with their child and was going to tell him at midnight on New Year’s Eve. She and Kat jump into the Pond but are only able to go back one day, which is enough for Fern as she is able to tell Cliff he is going to be a father which gives him joy.

Things were looking grim for Elliot, but…

Hallmark Media
It was looking grim for Elliot, who was hurt in the mine explosion. Kat was able to get him part-way to the Pond, but he lost consciousness. Luckily, both Jacob (Spencer Macpherson) and Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) happened to arrive and Jacob took Elliot back. When Kat jumps, she wasn’t able to get back to the present day but stayed in 1926 so she had no idea if he survived or not.
Fortunately, Elliot does recover and Kat does return to present day. The two finally get their moment when Elliot creates a makeshift fairy-tale proposal to which Kat obviously accepts.

Evelyn Says Goodbye

Alice visits Evelyn (Susan Hamaan) in the present day and we learn that she’s known all along that Alice was a time-traveler and that she’s kept her secret this entire time. Evelyn was the one who edited the film reel – it was something her grandfather (Gabriel Hogan) taught her to do when she was young. In a Kleenex-moment, Alice says goodbye to the friend (Devin Cecchetto), she met in the 1970s who was now dying of a terminal illness in the present day.
Del had a chance to make her peace with Colton

Hallmark Media
Del (Andie MacDowell) couldn’t move forward with her relationship with Sam (Rob Stewart) until she made peace with Colton’s (Jefferson Brown) death and finally say goodbye. At the beginning of the series, Del was inconsolable, having lost her husband to a car accident and her son to who knows what. During those four seasons, her son returned, but she never got to have closure and say goodbye to the love her life. Fortunately, the Pond granted her a chance to go back and see Colton again. They shared one last dance, talked about all their kids, and Del finally said goodbye to the great love of her life.

A Wedding That Spanned Generations

Hallmark Media
In one of the finals scenes of the series, Jacob and Abby’s wedding took place near the Pond. Luckily, no one falls in, but in attendance, whether in person or in spirit are generations of Landrys and Augustines and as we know from the series, Susanna Augustine’s will ensures that Lingemore is returned to its rightful owner — the Landrys.
