Big Valley is one of the best spots in Alberta to step back in time and enjoy the authentic western experience year-round.
This Alberta village is located just northeast of Calgary, hiding a whole world of wonder. Here, you’ll find things like a uniquely themed boardwalk with a funky collection of shops and businesses, a working railway station, and even a jailhouse from over 100 years ago.
If you’re looking to check out historic Alberta spots, Big Valley should be one to consider for your list.
What’s the history behind Big Valley’s railway?
According to the village’s website, the rails were initially laid through the area in 1911 as part of the Canadian Northern Railway (CNR). The station was only built the following year in 1912.
Although the terminal had quickly become popular, that success ended in 1924, when the CNR divided their divisional point facilities among three different Alberta municipalities, and Big Valley’s booming railroad had come to an end.
The remains of the yards and roundhouse are still visible today, and you’re even able to take a self-guided walking tour of the abandoned facilities.
Now, the tracks only exist from Stettler to Big Valley, owned by the East Central Alberta Heritage Society (ECHAC).
Alberta Prairie Steam Tours, a Stettler-based group, rents the use of the track for their steam train excursions, with some rides stopping in Big Valley. If you’re looking for one of the most popular things to do in the village, these excursions can’t be beat.
What else is there to do in Big Valley?
There are a couple of other cool things you can check out during your visit to the village.
This includes the Jimmy Jock Boardwalk, which, according to the village, is one of the main tourist attractions. Named after a local Chinese restaurateur who operated a restaurant on the same site, the boardwalk mimics an old frontier town, with wooden signs and a large mural.
Here, you’ll also be able to find local businesses, an ice cream shop, and a gift shop to commemorate the visit.
Another interesting historic spot to check out would be the Big Valley Jailhouse. From 1914 into the 40s, they used this little building for lock-ups until a local rancher started using it as an outbuilding and well house.
This restored jailhouse is located on the village’s main street, and you’re even able to take a step inside and experience the cell firsthand.
So, if you find yourself wanting to take a trip to the 1900s, look no further. Big Valley’s definitely going to have you covered.
