This Alberta town is kicking off the holidays with horse-drawn wagon rides and fireworks

5 November 20263 Mins Read

There’s definitely no shortage of ways to get into the holiday spirit around Calgary, but sometimes it’s worth heading outside the city for a festive night out. Cochrane’s annual Light Up returns this month, bringing the town together for an evening of holiday lights, horse-drawn wagon rides, live entertainment, and festive fun for the whole family.

If you’re thinking of making the trip west, here’s everything you need to know ahead of the celebration.

What to expect at the Cochrane Light Up

What is the Cochrane Light Up?

Cochrane Light Up is the town’s annual kickoff to the holiday season, with this year marking the event’s 42nd edition. Each year, Historic Downtown and The Station at Cochrane Crossing are decked out in festive lights that you can explore throughout the night.

According to organizers, the evening will kick off with an official lighting ceremony before the festivities continue with holiday music, horse-drawn wagon rides, and a fireworks show. And if you need something to sip on during the event, hot chocolate will be available.

When and where is Cochrane Light Up?

The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2026, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Historic Downtown Cochrane and at The Station at Cochrane Crossing. The lighting ceremony is expected to begin around 5:15 p.m., and the evening will wrap up with a fireworks finale around 7 p.m.

If you can’t make it to the event but you still want to check out the light displays, the festive decorations will continue to shine through the Historic Downtown every night through early January 2027.

What else do I need to know before I go?

Cochrane Light Up takes place entirely outdoors, so it’s a good idea to dress for the weather and wear comfortable footwear. Organizers also encourage you to bring a reusable mug if you plan to grab hot chocolate at the event, as it will help reduce waste.

More activities are still in the works, with additional details expected soon, so we’ll keep you updated as the event gets closer.

So whether you’re looking to start a new family tradition, spend a festive evening with friends or just get out of the city for a change of scenery, the Cochrane Light Up has something for everyone to enjoy.

When: Saturday, Nov. 28, 2026
Time: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Historic Downtown — 1st St. W, Cochrane, Alta. and The Station at Cochrane Crossing – 360 Railway St. W, Cochrane, Alta.
Cost: Free
