This Alberta town transforms into a pumpkin-filled wonderland every fall

11 September 20264 Mins Read

Some Alberta towns are known for their mountains, others for their lakes, but Smoky Lake has built a strong reputation for gigantic pumpkins. Known as the Pumpkin Capital of Alberta, the town goes all out every fall, with huge pumpkins and an annual autumn festival that puts these gourds to the test.

So, what can you expect to see when you visit Smoky Lake during pumpkin season? Let’s take a look.

What to expect at Smoky Lake during fall

What is the Great White North Pumpkin Fair and Weigh-Off?

The Great White North Pumpkin Fair and Weigh-Off is the town’s signature autumn event, and it’s centred around one very important thing: who can grow the biggest pumpkin.

According to the Town of Smoky Lake, the annual event brings nearly 10,000 people to a community of just over 1,000.

The highlight of the weekend is the weigh-off, where local and visiting growers bring out some of their biggest pumpkins to see how they measure up. They weigh the pumpkins one by one, with the heaviest taking the top spot.

What else can I see and do at the festival?

Alongside the weigh-off, the streets of Smoky Lake will be packed with things to see and do, including farmers and artisan markets, food trucks, live entertainment, and a midway.

You can also wander through a giant corn maze, watch live pumpkin carving,

and check out the annual Show ‘N Shine car show downtown.

When is the Great White North Pumpkin Fair and Weigh-Off?

The 2026 Great White North Pumpkin Fair and Weigh-Off is happening on Friday, Oct. 2 and Saturday, Oct. 3. The main weigh-off event will take place on Saturday at the Smoky Lake Agricultural Complex, while the other festival activities are spread throughout the town.

Friday’s festivities will run from 4 to 9 p.m., with food vendors and outdoor beer gardens, while Saturday will run all day from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Is the Great White North Pumpkin Fair free to attend?

You won’t need to buy a ticket or pick up a wristband to get into the festival. Instead, the event runs on donations and suggests contributing $10 per person to help support the festivities.

What is Pumpkin Park?

Smoky Lake’s pumpkin obsession isn’t limited to the annual fall festival. Pumpkin Park features seven oversized concrete pumpkins that stay in the park year-round.

The park is completely free to visit, and if you’re already making a trip to the town, you might as well stop by and get a picture with the massive pumpkins while you’re there.

Where: 246 W Railway Dr., Smoky Lake, Alta.

What else can I do in Smoky Lake?

If you’re planning to make the trip out for the Pumpkin Fair, there are a few other spots around the area that are worth adding to your itinerary.

  • Iron Horse Trail
    • If you’re heading over to Pumpkin Park, the Iron Horse Trail is located just steps away and follows a former railway route. It’s open to hikers, cyclists, and off-highway vehicles, and it stretches through forests and farmland.
      • Where: 246 W. Railway Dr., Smoky Lake, Alta.
  • Smoky Lake Museum
    • Housed in the historic Victoria School building, the Smoky Lake Museum features local artifacts, antiques, pioneer equipment, and other pieces from the area’s history.
      • Where: 5622 49th St., Smoky Lake, Alta.
  • Serben Farms
    • About five kilometres west of Smoky Lake, Serben Farms has an on-farm market which is full of locally produced and farm-raised foods.
      • Where: Hwy. 28 and Range Rd. 180, Smoky Lake County, Alta.

Where is Smoky Lake?

Smoky Lake is located in northeastern Alberta and sits along Highway 28, about an hour northeast of Edmonton. If you’re coming from Calgary, it’s roughly a three-hour drive, while Red Deer is about a two-hour drive away.

By the time you leave Smoky Lake, you’ll have seen pumpkins in almost every shape and size imaginable. With an entire weekend dedicated to growing, weighing and celebrating them, the town certainly doesn’t shy away from its Pumpkin Capital title.
