This massive 40-room Italianate-style villa in Ontario is open year-round

10 August 20263 Mins Read

Did you know that the City of Hamilton is home to a massive castle? Of course, this is in addition to its stunning landscapes, rushing waterfalls and mountain steps the region enjoys every season. This particular Ontario gem is none other than Dundurn Castle. It’s a historic site just waiting to be explored, and luckily for you, it’s just a short drive away from Toronto.

If you needed a reason to leave the city and immerse yourself in history, here’s one.

What is Dundurn Castle?

According to the City of Hamilton, the massive estate is a 40-room Italianate-style villa that was built in the 1830s. It’s the former site of a fortified military encampment established by the British during the War of 1812.

The moment you step through its doors, you’ll be transported back to the mid-19th century. You’ll even be greeted by a costumed interpreter who will give you a tour of the place.

It was once home to Sir Allan Napier MacNab, a “railway magnate, lawyer and Premier of the United Canadas” from 1854 to 1856. Per the City, MacNab and his family lived like royalty in this opulent castle, and the servants lived “below the stairs.”

Today, Dundurn Castle offers a glimpse into their world as you wander your way through all 40 rooms.

“Her Majesty, The Queen Consort, is the museum’s Patron and the great, great, great-granddaughter of Sir Allan MacNab,” shares the City.

The tour takes around one hour to complete. In the warmer months, you can also pay a visit to the historic Kitchen Garden, which hosts workshops where you can harvest food for 19th-century recipes.

On your way out, you can stop at the Coach House, which is now a shop that sells unique gifts and items all handmade here in Canada.

Tickets to Dundurn Castle

Admission to the castle also includes entry to The Hamilton Military Museum. According to the City of Hamilton, general admission tickets will be available for purchase in person only at the museums. If you have a Hamilton Public Library card, that can be presented in person at the museum to receive free general admission.

Though walk-in visitors are accommodated when it is possible, tour times do sell out during the busy months, so purchasing tickets ahead of time may be a great idea.

Tickets are priced at $16.75 for adults 18 to 59 years of age, and $14.25 for youth and seniors. The castle is open Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., and closed on Mondays, Good Friday, Canada Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Like Casa Loma, Dundurn Castle also hosts events throughout the year, such as garden tours and Christmas programming.

If you’re looking for a day trip on a summer weekend, full of history, this is the place to be.

When: Tuesday to Sunday
Time:
Noon to 4 p.m.
Where:
610 York Blvd., Hamilton, Ont.
Cost: $15.50 per adult (18+), $13.25 (students and seniors)
