This Paris Landmark Will Be Closing for the Next Five Years

2 August 20262 Mins Read

If you’ve been dreaming of taking in a live ballet or opera performance at the historic Palais Garnier on your next trip to France, you’ll want to adjust those itineraries. The ParisOpera has announced that planned renovations on its 150-year-old home will take three years longer than originally expected due to lead contamination, stretching the closure to a full five years.

While travelers originally knew the iconic Palais Garnier would be shuttering for two years between 2027 and 2029, the expanded overhaul and decontamination project means the doors will now stay closed through 2032.

Stricter Regulations and Long-Term Preservation

While stage performances will be completely halted from 2027 to 2032, the Paris Opera has noted that daytime self-guided and architectural tours are expected to remain accessible for most of the restoration, though select areas may face temporary access limits during heavy work.

The delay comes as health and safety standards evolve across the city. Paris Opera Director General Alexander Neef explained that “stricter regulations” require lead to be removed from around the stage area before the venue can safely welcome back audiences.

“It’s a decision we stand by, a decision taken out of responsibility, a decision made to ensure the long-term future of our asset,” Neef shared. “We have taken this step today in order to avoid having to launch other major works in a few years’ time.”

What It Means for Your Next Trip to the City of Light

Famous for its grand marble entrance and the breathtaking domed ceiling painted by Marc Chagall, the Palais Garnier is one of the most recognizable cultural landmarks in Europe. The full renovation and restoration effort is estimated at 450 million euros ($515 million), with a quarter funded by the French state.

It also isn’t the only major site undergoing a facelift in Paris—the Pompidou Centre modern art gallery is currently in the middle of its own five-year modernization project.

For culture lovers, there is still a silver lining: the institution’s second, modern venue—the Bastille Opera House—will remain open while work is completed on the Palais Garnier, before eventually undergoing its own two-year refresh down the road.
