Three of the year’s best films are coming to streaming this month – and you can watch them for free, Canada Reviews

2 April 20262 Mins Read

Last year’s Cannes Film Festival offered cinephiles three promising titles that went on to become major frontrunners and nominees this awards season. If you missed out these world cinema gems during their theatrical run, you can stream them all now without paying a buck.

After acquiring global distribution for several Cannes titles, MUBI’s streaming services has a stacked roster for April with the new arrivals including The Secret Agent, My Father’s Shadow and Sound of Falling.

Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Brazilian period drama The Secret Agent stacked up three awards back at Cannes and went on to garner two Oscar nominations for best actor and best international feature. The ’70s-set political thriller unfolds in the sun-drenched metropolis of Recife as Brazil gets taken over by a military dictatorship.

Wagner Moura received universal acclaim for his turn as a university professor fleeing the authoritarian regime, ultimately picking up a Golden Globe for best drama actor.

Meanwhile, My Father’s Shadow proved to be a triumphant success for debutant director Akinola Davies Jr who won a Special Mention at Cannes, marking the first time for a Nigerian film to be selected in the festival’s official competition. Drawing from his own nostalgic memories of growing up in Nigeria, the film is set during a turbulent election in Lagos as a father (Sope Dirisu) embarks on a memorable trip with his two sons. The British-Nigerian production was selected as UK’s official entry to the Oscars, while Davies earned a BAFTA for outstanding debut.

Sound of Falling is another festival favourite that finally finds a streaming home in MUBI this April. The German drama won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was eventually shortlisted for the Oscars. Mascha Schilinski’s haunting, non-linear drama traces four generations of women connected by a rural farm and cycles of patriarchal abuse.

How can I watch them for free?

In case you don’t have a MUBI membership, you can still stream these film festival favourites as MUBI offers a 7-day free trial for new users.

When do these films start streaming on MUBI?

My Father’s Shadow arrives on MUBI on April 10, followed by The Secret Agent on April 17 and Sound of Falling on April 24.
