Vancouver’s beloved four-day art crawl spotlights over 500 artists next month

13 October 20263 Mins Read

Vancouver’s art scene is as flourishing and vibrant as they come, and much of the city’s creativity stems from East Vancouver. Showcasing the work of emerging local and international artists alike, the four-day Eastside Culture Crawl is a great way to get a glimpse behind the artist curtain. Over 500 artists open their studio doors to the public every November, making this a prime chance to see a wide array of art and crafts without shelling out a museum admission fee.

From watercolour paintings and blown glass to ceramics, printmaking, pottery, furniture, and jewelry, there’s something for every art lover here. And even if your only goal is to get out of the house as the weather gets colder and wetter, this visual arts festival is the perfect opportunity for community connection and creative inspiration. Who knows what you’ll discover or who you’ll meet?

The crawl spans dozens of buildings and artist studios bounded by Columbia Street, First Ave, Victoria Drive, and the Waterfront, including The Cultch and the festival hub, Parker Street Studios, which houses 140 artists across four floors.

In addition to interacting with tons of art, visitors can peruse the crawl for creations for sale, which are perfect for all kinds of holiday gifts. A series of workshops, demos, exhibits, and artist talks give you the chance to increase your understanding of art practices on the Eastside and get in on the action. This includes everything from letterpress printing to analog film.

Moving Art/Unity is the festival’s film and video showcase, which typically includes online premieres and a preview exhibit before the culture crawl officially kicks off, so stay tuned for more info to come.

This year, the crawl takes place from Nov. 19 to 22, between 5 and 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekend.

Those looking for a tasty bite to eat while studio-hopping will find plenty of food trucks at Parker Street Studios, including Bistrovan, Chickpea, Green Coast Coffee, Disco Cheetah, Midnight Joe’s, and Nami. If you’re looking for other options, though, Fujiya has amazing fresh sushi, curry, and noodles you can grab to go or eat inside the grocery store.

Before you head out for a day of creative exploration, remember to keep your pets at home and ask the artists before taking any photos of their works.

Whether it’s your first crawl or your 100th, the Eastside Culture Crawl is a treasured annual event with something for everyone.
