What Guests Remember – And How AI is Helping Hotels Deliver It

In Brief: Jennifer Axness examines how hotels are adopting AI technologies to tailor on-property guest interactions, aiming to improve satisfaction and differentiate their offerings in a competitive hospitality market.

I travel a lot. And like most people who do, I find that the trips I remember best aren’t always the ones with the most impressive hotel rooms or the most amazing views. They’re the ones where everything just came together – where I felt genuinely seen, and where the people around me seemed to know exactly what I needed before I had to ask.

Our Travel Dreams 2026 research – which draws on the perspectives of 6,000 global travelers and 500 senior hoteliers – shows us that today’s travelers increasingly expect flexible, tailored, and emotionally rewarding trips. Some 74% want personalization. But personalization isn’t a feature you can simply switch on. It’s the outcome of connected data, smart systems, and people who are empowered to act on insights when they need to.

Guests may not always be able to describe what made a stay great, but they know when it happens… and they notice when it doesn’t. Today, the tools to actually deliver on guests’ expectations, consistently and at scale, are finally within reach.

The gap between expectation and experience

Ask a guest what made a stay memorable, and most likely their response will focus on how the experience made them feel – not what features were available. Perhaps a front desk employee greeted them by name. Their room was ready early because the hotel noticed their flight had landed ahead of schedule. Or they received a restaurant recommendation that actually matched their dietary needs.

Many hotels are still working with disconnected systems – a property management system that doesn’t talk to the CRM, reservation data that doesn’t flow through to the front desk, guest preferences noted at check-in but forgotten by the next visit. The result is a fragmented experience that guests feel, even if they can’t name it. Something just doesn’t quite click.

The good news is that those memorable moments are entirely achievable – but they don’t happen by chance. They happen when the right data is in the right hands at the right time. And this is where AI is beginning to change the game.

What AI actually makes possible

One of the most exciting things about AI in hospitality isn’t any single feature – it’s what becomes possible when data is finally connected. When a hotel can draw on a guest’s history, preferences, and the details that show who they are as a traveler, the experience shifts from transactional to genuinely personal.

For instance, a business traveler may always request a quiet room on a high floor. AI can flag that preference automatically to the team on duty, and enable the hotel to deliver it proactively, without having to be asked twice. This sort of quiet, effortless service can turn a satisfied guest into a loyal one.

Technology that works as one is key. According to our Travel Dreams 2026 research, hoteliers ranked data integration across all sources (35%) and investing to get their technology stack working seamlessly together (33%) among their top operational priorities. The goal here isn’t more technology – it’s a single, connected digital ecosystem that removes friction behind the scenes, so that the overall guest experience can be smooth, warm, and human.

The human touch still matters – AI makes it better

One of the clearest outcomes of our research is that guests aren’t asking for pure automation. They’re asking for ease. In almost every area of a hotel stay – from check-in to concierge to room service – a majority of travelers still prefer a human-led interaction.

The role of AI is not to replace those moments, but to make the people delivering them better informed and better prepared.

Hotels are investing heavily in AI, data-driven personalization, and integrated systems to create more seamless, tailored guest experiences. But as our data shows, the experience guests remember isn’t determined by the sophistication of the system behind it. It’s determined by whether the team member behind that experience had the information they needed to make that guest feel truly welcome.

AI should be working quietly in the background, connecting the dots – so that when a guest arrives, the team is ready. Not because a script or checklist prompted them to be, but because they were prepared.

From data to delight

Hotels and destinations have more tools than ever to understand the traveler. The real challenge is learning how to translate that understanding into something guests actually feel: a stay that is easier, warmer, and more personal than they expected.

It won’t come from any single product or platform. It will come when systems are integrated, when data flows freely across every touchpoint, and when teams are empowered with real-time insight. When all of that comes together, the guest doesn’t notice the technology at all. They just notice that everything worked.
