What Is Colony Budding in Ants?
Colony budding occurs when queens, workers and developing ants leave an established nest and create another colony nearby. Disturbance can encourage this behavior in certain ants, which is why the wrong treatment can make an infestation harder to control.
Not every ant colony responds this way. Some ants establish new colonies when part of an existing colony breaks away naturally. Others are more likely to split when the nest is disturbed.
Texas A&M’s Integrated Pest Management program notes that some ants with multiple queens (such as pharaoh ants) are prone to budding and warns that fast-acting insecticides can cause susceptible colonies to divide and disperse. Yes, with certain ant infestations. Some fast-acting or repellent insecticides can disrupt colonies and encourage susceptible ants to relocate or establish new nests. With other ants, spraying simply provides temporary relief because the nest remains untreated.

Ant bait works more slowly than sprays and allows foraging workers to carry it back toward the nest, where it is shared with other ants. University of Minnesota Extension describes bait as the best way to treat many indoor ant nests because workers transport the material into areas that sprays cannot reach. That slower action is intentional. Workers need time to collect the bait, return to the nesting area and distribute it through the colony.
For this reason, baits require patience. Extension guidance notes that control can take several weeks or longer, depending on the infestation. During this time, you should avoid spraying insecticide around active bait stations, as it can interfere with workers carrying bait back to the nest.
Which Type of Ants Are Susceptible to Colony Budding?
Colony budding is most common among ant species that live in large colonies with multiple queens. Pharaoh ants, Argentine ants, odorous house ants and ghost ants are among the species known to establish new nests through this process.
