If you’ve been daydreaming about starting afresh somewhere remote and surrounded by luscious, peaceful countryside, we’ve got some exciting news. 

Portugal has been a longtime favourite amongst people looking to relocate, and the country is offering eligible applicants cash if they are willing to up sticks and settle somewhere a little more remote. 

The scheme is called the ‘Emprego Interior MAIS’ programme, and its goal is to ‘cover moving and other costs to relocate’ to a rural region, according to Travel + Leisure.  

How does the programme work?

Well, according to the government website, the funding ‘provides financial support to workers who change their usual residence to inland territories to carry out professional activity.’

The amount you’ll be entitled to varies depending on several factors, but could reach a maximum of €3,759.91, plus an extra 20 percent per person in your household who moves with you. 

Sixty percent of your payment will reportedly be sent 10 days after your application is successful, with the remaining 40 percent paid the 13th month after you’ve started working. 

Who is eligible for the programme?

Sadly there are some conditions, though the government’s website lists people who are entitled to requesting support, which includes unemployed people who are registered with Portugal’s employment services, as well as employed or self-employed Portuguese nationals, remote workers, and citizens of the EU and wider European Economic Area.
