(Al Jazeera Media Network) Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has set a number of conditions – including the United States paying compensation and ending a naval blockade – for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
It comes after Sardar Mohebi, spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said the reopening of the strategic waterway is not subject to a deal with Oman but conditional on the US “fully accepting” Tehran’s conditions.
The United Arab Emirates has accused Iran of firing a missile at a tanker owned by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company as it crossed the Strait of Hormuz.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan says Iran is not the target of a mutual defence pact signed between Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan in Mecca that treats an attack on any one of the countries as an attack on all three.
