What is the history behind 12 Mile Coulee?
According to the City of Calgary, archaeological evidence suggests Indigenous people used the coulee for hunting and camping for at least 8,000 years. Evidence of that history can still be found in the area, including a stone circle, also known as a tipi ring, that dates back around 2,000 years.
In the 1800s, European settlers also farmed and ranched in the area as they arrived in the region. Later, the coulee became a landmark along an old stagecoach route to Cochrane.
