‘Gilmore Girls’ Star Bluntly Criticizes One of the Show’s Most Controversial Main Storylines: ‘I Don’t Think People Like This’

13 October 20262 Mins Read

As with any long-running TV series, there’s always going to be some degree of skepticism when it comes to most storylines. While some fans might accept the narrative, others might lob some pointed criticism towards certain elements of the show, especially when held up to the high acclaim of its previous seasons.

In this regard, Gilmore Girls is certainly no exception. But what is interesting to note is the criticisms of one of the show’s titular stars herself.

During a recent appearance on Hey Dude… The 90s Called!, Graham was asked about a controversial storyline in season six of Gilmore Girls, which saw her single mom Lorelai and Rory begin to drift apart.

The storyline in question officially took place after Rory dramatically drops out of Yale University, leading to an intense fight between her and Lorleai that results in them refusing to speak to one another for the first half of season six.

Reflecting on the polarizing storyline, Graham admitted it was difficult to play up the tension between her character and Rory, confirming to the show’s hosts, “Yes, it was hard to play.”

In fact, Graham felt so strongly about the storyline, she went so far as to speak to creator and showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino to voice her concerns.

“I remember asking Amy, I was like, ‘I don’t think people like this. And it’s hard to justify and it feels out of character,’” she said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Graham spoke about the unique quality that made Gilmore Girls special, as well as the confusion around whether to classify it as a drama series or a comedy.

“They would always switch our category for any kind of award submission. They couldn’t decide,” she remembered.

“And I remember somebody saying to me, ‘How can you guys submit in comedy when you know all the scenes are these big fight scenes and stuff?’” she continued. “So there’s a bunch of conversation around that.”
