This Calgary art gallery is hosting a free event with dance performances and workshops

30 October 20263 Mins Read

Calgary has no shortage of things to do, but finding something fun that doesn’t cost a thing is another story. Luckily, Contemporary Calgary is hosting its Free First Thursday this November, giving you a chance to explore the gallery after hours with a special lineup of performances, art, and creative activities. This month’s event will be in partnership with Springboard Performance as part of Fluid Fest, featuring Silvering: In Community, an evening of dance performances, workshops and interactive experiences taking place throughout the gallery.

Here’s what you’ll find throughout the gallery during the November event.

What to expect at Free First Thursdays

What is Contemporary Calgary?

Located in the city’s former Centennial Planetarium, Contemporary Calgary is a public art gallery that is dedicated to showcasing contemporary art in all its forms, featuring work from local and international artists.

According to Contemporary Calgary, the gallery hosts rotating exhibitions, educational programs, performances, and festivals to make art accessible to everyone.

What is Free First Thursday?

Free First Thursday is a monthly community event hosted at the gallery that lets you explore the space without paying admission. The event takes place on the first Thursday of each month, with the gallery staying open late for an evening of art, entertainment and activities.

Each Free First Thursday features a rotating lineup of programming, so there’s something different happening throughout the year.

This month’s Free First Thursday is being presented in partnership with Springboard Performance as part of Fluid Fest. Throughout the evening, you’ll be able to catch live dance performances, take part in movement activities like Taiji Qigong and seated ballet and explore interactive art experiences inspired by themes of again, memory and connection.

In addition to the art and activities, there will also be free popcorn, along with a bar with drinks available for purchase.

When is Free First Thursday?

Free First Thursday takes place on the first Thursday of each month, with the November edition happening on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, from 5 to 9 p.m. And if you can make it to this month’s event, you’ll have one more chance to check it out before the end of the year. The final Free First Thursday of 2026 will take place on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2026.

There won’t be a Free First Thursday in January 2027, but monthly programming will resume in February, following the gallery’s usual schedule.

Do I need to register for the event?

Although admission is free, Contemporary Calgary asks that you register online in advance to secure your spot.

So if you’ve been meaning to check out Contemporary Calgary, this is your chance to explore the gallery, experience the exhibitions and catch some performances without spending a dime.

When: Thursday, Nov. 5 and Thursday, Dec. 3, 2026
Time: 5 to 9 p.m.
Where: Contemporary Calgary — 701 11th St. SW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Free (registration required)
