A nine-day celebration of comedy, magic, and theatre is taking over Calgary

31 July 20263 Mins Read

The Calgary Fringe Festival is returning for its 20th year this summer, bringing nine days of comedy, magic, and theatre to the city. The event is all about giving artists the freedom to express their creativity, meaning audiences can expect performances that are completely outside the box.

So if you’re wondering what’s in store for this year’s festival, here’s everything you need to know.

Now you’re probably wondering what exactly a Fringe Festival entails. According to the Canadian Fringe Festival Association, the first Fringe Festival took place in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1947, when a group of performers created their own unofficial festival after not being included in the city’s main art event.

Since then, the Fringe movement has grown into a worldwide celebration of creativity, with festivals giving both emerging and established artists a chance to share their work.

The Calgary Fringe Festival follows the exact same approach and brings together performers from different backgrounds. During the nine-day event, venues across the neighbourhood of Inglewood will host a diverse lineup of performances, including comedy, magic, theatre, storytelling, improv, and more.

Beyond the performances themselves, the festival will also include extra events throughout the week. Attendees can check out the Fringe After Dark programming, which will feature activities like karaoke, trivia, and a Rocky Horror Picture Show night.

Calgary Fringe Festival dates, tickets, and details

The Calgary Fringe Festival will take over the city from Friday, July 31 to Saturday, Aug. 8, with performances taking place at various locations throughout Inglewood. Tickets are $20 per show, so you can mix and match performances depending on what catches your eye.

Individual performances run for 60 to 70 minutes, with many shows taking place around 7 and 8 p.m.

And if you’ve got kids, the festival offers daytime performances for younger audiences, so nobody has to miss out on the fun.

If there’s one thing the Calgary Fringe Festival has mastered, it’s keeping audiences guessing. The fun is not knowing exactly what you’re going to find, and that’s what keeps people coming back year after year.

So take a look at this year’s lineup and see what surprises are waiting behind the curtain!

When: Friday, July 31, to Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026
Time: Performance times vary
Where: Various venues in Inglewood, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: $20 per show
