A piece of Canadian rodeo history is hiding in this Alberta town

21 July 20263 Mins Read

Stavely is a small southern Alberta town with a surprisingly big story to tell. Located about an hour south of Calgary, the community may look quiet at first glance, but it’s home to a big piece of Western history that put it on the map. Stavely hosted Canada’s first indoor rodeo, which is a pretty impressive claim for a community with just a few thousand residents.

Let’s take a closer look at the history and landmarks that make Stavely such an interesting spot.

The history of Stavely

According to the Town of Stavely, the town made its mark in the rodeo world in 1929 when it hosted what is considered Canada’s first indoor rodeo. At the time, bringing rodeo events inside was a completely new idea, and the event became a defining moment in the town’s history.

Nearly a century later. Western culture is still woven into Stavely’s identity, with the town continuing to celebrate the cowboy culture and ranching traditions that helped shape it.

The legacy lives on through the annual Stavely Pro Rodeo, which brings the community together every summer. The event runs in June each year and features a variety of rodeo events, including bull riding, barrel racing, and other competitions. The weekend continues to showcase the same culture that has been a part of the town’s story for generations.

And Stavely’s Western roots stretch far beyond the arena. Standing tall over the town is a historic grain elevator. Like many prairie communities across Alberta, Stavely was shaped by farming and ranching, and grain elevators once played a very important role in storing and transporting crops from local farms.

If you want to get a deeper understanding of Stavely’s past, the Stavely Museum is another spot worth checking out. The museum features displays dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, offering a look at the people and stories that helped shape the community.

The museum recently reopened after a two-year renovation, transforming the space into a hands-on, open-concept museum where visitors can explore the history through interactive exhibits.

While Stavely may not be the biggest dot on the Alberta map, it’s definitely one with a story worth remembering. So next time you’re driving through the southern end of the province, take a little extra time and see the town that helped shape a piece of Alberta’s history.

Where: 5002 – 50th Ave., Stavely, Alta.
