Chris Brown Avoids Jail Time After Being Sentenced For 2023 U.K. Nightclub Attack

26 October 20263 Mins Read

More than three years after a violent altercation took place at a London nightclub, Chris Brown has learned his legal fate, and the Grammy-winning singer won’t be serving time behind bars.

On Monday, Oct. 26, Brown received an 8-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to affray — a charge involving the use or threat of unlawful violence — at London’s Southwark Crown Court, according to Variety.

Before sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner told Brown, “I take account of your employment and long-established career in music. Your fame, commercial success, and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone.”

Brown on July 24, 2026, pleaded guilty to a public order offense following an alleged brawl at a London nightclub in 2023. “Guilty,” replied Brown, 37, dressed in a beige suit and dark tie, after the charge of affray was put to him as he stood in the dock at Southwark Crown Court in London. The sentencing stems from a February 2023 incident that occurred at Tape London nightclub, where Brown was accused of attacking music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle. According to prosecutors, Brown struck Diaw in the head with the bottle before continuing the assault as Diaw attempted to escape.

Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also participated in the attack by punching Diaw. This was all captured on surveillance footage. Diaw later received hospital treatment for injuries to his head and knee. Akinlolu also pleaded guilty and received a sentence of four months, suspended for 12 months.

“They continued their assault whilst the victim attempted to flee through the club,” the CPS said in a statement via Variety. “The victim was kicked while he was seated defenseless on the floor.”

“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” Claire Campbell, a senior prosecutor at CPS London South, said after securing the conviction.

After Diaw went to the hospital for his injuries, a warrant was issued for the 37-year-old artist and Akinlolu’s arrest. Brown was eventually arrested in May 2025, when he returned to the U.K. for a Manchester stop on his world tour. He was initially held in custody before being released on £5 million bail, allowing him to continue his international tour.

Both men denied charges of assault and grievous bodily harm, while Brown also denied possessing an offensive weapon. All of those charges were later dropped.

Under the terms of his new suspended sentence, Brown will not have to serve eight months in prison unless he violates the conditions imposed by the court.
