About CAMP
The Canadian Academy of Mask and Puppetry is an Alberta-based company dedicated to mask and puppetry by fostering emerging and next generation of theatre creators whose main interest is in the innovation of this craft, and also to provide mentorship to professional artists of all mediums who wish to expand their practice of artistic expression. Camp is dedicated to the greater community and strives to deliver these forms to people of all ages, and to inspire an active, engaged and appreciative energy toward these performative art forms.
The Role
We’re looking for an Executive Director to take on the administrative and operational leadership of CAMP so that our artistic leadership can focus on art making, teaching and producing projects across Western Canada.. Reporting to the Board of Directors and working alongside the duo-Education Directors, you’ll steward the business side of a small arts organization with a big footprint. This is a quarter-time position, roughly a day and a half per week, suited to someone who works efficiently, independently, and likes building and maintaining internal systems. CAMP’s operations are modest enough to allow this position to align with other diversified income pursuits, although sometimes there are short periods of intense applications.
What You’ll Do
Operations & compliance
Oversee day-to-day operations and keep CAMP’s regulatory obligations in good standing, GOA Societies return, WCB, AGLC, insurance, records management. Maintain administrative systems, policies, and procedures.
Financial stewardship
Develop and manage project and annual budgets with the Education Directors. Run monthly finance meetings with our bookkeeper, deliver financial reports to the Board, and coordinate the annual financials and CRA return.
Fund development
Maintain CAMP’s annual grant strategy, identifying opportunities, supporting the artistic team through writing and reporting, and ensuring compliance. Cultivate relationships with funders, donors, and government agencies, and look for new revenue that supports sustainability.
Governance & board relations
Coordinate quarterly board meetings, prepare reports and recommendations, and support policy development, strategic planning, and business planning.
Contracts & partnerships
Draft and execute contracts and letters of agreement, write and request letters of support, and maintain relationships with our community, school, and cultural partners.
Planning & coordination
Keep the year-plan calendar of projects and deadlines. Coordinate staff meetings, support annual program planning, book studio and workshop space, and oversee workshop registration and participant information.
Communications
Maintain website content and support consistent messaging across CAMP’s platforms.
Who We’re Looking For
• Leadership experience in the nonprofit, arts, cultural, or community sectors
• Strong financial management and budgeting skills
• Success in grant writing, fundraising, and funder relations
• Experience working with a Board of Directors and governance structures
• Working knowledge of nonprofit regulations and reporting requirements in Alberta
• Excellent written communication and relationship-building skills
• Genuine interest in the arts, you don’t need a puppetry background, but curiosity about the work matters
Terms
Compensation: $18,000 annually for approximately 1.5 days per week.
Additional income may be added for UNIMA Canada West administration ($1500 – 2000 est)
After a year review, there is the potential to increase the capacity/time and wage of role
Schedule: Flexible, with some in-person presence in Calgary required for board meetings, workshops, and community events.
