BioWare declared Nov. 7 a holiday in 2012 after the release of Mass Effect 3. Boot up the original Mass Effect and you’ll see why: Commander Shepard’s chest armor carries the N7 emblem, the top rung of the Systems Alliance’s special-forces designation. The calendar supplied the rest: N(ovember)7. For fourteen years now, N7 Day has been BioWare’s annual celebration of Mass Effect. This year, following news about the studio’s closure, fans are taking it over — and inviting us all to participate in a critical assignment, should we choose to accept it.
The fan group We Are Mass Effect is asking players on any platform to boot up a Mass Effect game at the same time on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. ET (11 a.m. to 2 p.m. PT, 7 to 10 p.m. GMT and 8 to 11 p.m. CET). The idea is to see as many people as possible playing at once to truly demonstrate (with data!) how many of us love and are still actively enjoying Mass Effect.
Let’s put this challenge in perspective: How many people have played this game at once on Steam? Legendary Edition’s all-time peak is 59,817 concurrent players, set May 2021, two days after the remaster’s launch. Since fall 2021, the highest monthly peak has been about 9,300 players, and over the past year, monthly peaks have run between 4,200 and 6,500 people playing simultaneously. But that’s just one platform: Steam’s chart don’t factor anyone on consoles or on Windows PC via the EA app, so the organizers invite those players to share screenshots and clips with #SaveMassEffect during that three-hour window instead.
Saving Mass Effect may be one of the community’s goals this Saturday. It’s certainly been a popular initiative over the past two weeks. A Change.org petition asking EA to keep the series going has gathered almost 300,000 verified signatures. A fan-organized Times Square billboard flashed “Keelah Si’yah #SaveMassEffect” (the first, a quarian phrase about the hope of finding home) ran for 15 seconds every hour on Oct. 26. Those signatures and that billboard are a measure of how much this series means to people. Fans are hoping this year’s N7 Day sends a similarly unmissable message.
BioWare’s own lore describes the climb to N7 as a ladder of invitation-only courses. First-timers at the Alliance’s academy in Rio de Janeiro spend more than 20 hours a day leading small units through hostile terrain on little sleep or food. Those who do well earn an N1 — the first rung on the ladder, for those counting — and an invitation back. N2 through N6 move to space stations and other planets for zero-G fighting, jetpack flight, and combat diving. The last stage drops trainees into real conflict zones, where only those who perform in an “admirable and effective fashion” earn the 7.
We meet (and play as) Commander Shepard after they’ve gone through all of this, admirably and effectively. In the first hour of the game, this doesn’t mean much, yet. But as you go through the trilogy, the game shows you precisely what this means: What a 7 is for, i.e., the very longest odds, and the people who get sent to face them.
In the years since BioWare established the first N7 Day, fans have marked the occasion with art, fan fiction and cosplay. BioWare, too, spent the holiday’s early years turning it into a fan party. The 2012 debut, held the same month as the first Mass Effect’s fifth anniversary, came with downloadable art and posters, a Loyalty Pack for logging into Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer, a livestream covering the then-upcoming Omega DLC, merch discounts and a photo contest.

N7 Day continued to grow even after the trilogy wrapped. In 2020, Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer reunited with more of the trilogy’s voice cast at 11 a.m. PT (the same hour this year’s play day begins), on the day BioWare and EA announced Mass Effect Legendary Edition. In 2021, the studio recapped Legendary Edition player stats (for example: 60% saved Ashley on Virmire, 40% saved Kaidan) alongside Steam stickers, sales and a cosplay how-to video. That same year, BioWare called N7 Day, most of all, a chance to “celebrate you, the fans.” On N7 Day 2025, executive producer Mike Gamble confirmed the next Mass Effect game was in development, a project that has come to be known as the now-canceled Mass Effect: Universe. His message to fans that day: ‘We’ve been through a lot together, and we appreciate you.’”
This Saturday, following a few years of muted N7 Days, the community aims to make the biggest waves in years — to celebrate both Mass Effect and BioWare, and to do it in style. For Mass Effect’s biggest fans, Shepard has already saved the galaxy more than once. They’re just trying to return the favor.
