Netflix 2027 Release Date, All The New Cast and Everything We Know

7 October 20268 Mins Read

It has now been almost a year since the fourth season of The Witcher debuted on Netflix on October 30, 2025, alongside the stealth-dropped special The Rats: A Witcher Tale. With cameras wrapped and post-production deep underway, all eyes are on the final chapter. Here is our updated, comprehensive guide to everything we know about The Witcher Season 5, which is now expected to arrive on our screens sometime in 2027.

The fifth and final season was officially announced alongside Season 4 back in 2024, confirming long-standing rumors that Netflix’s flagship fantasy adaptation would wrap its journey after five seasons.

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich commented on the final run at the start of production:

It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia.

We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.

Heading into the final stretch, the stakes are undeniably high. Season 4 marked Liam Hemsworth’s debut taking over the mantle of Geralt from Henry Cavill. However, the season suffered a steep drop in viewership. Samba TV reported a 35% decline in US households for the premiere episode (577k compared to Season 3’s 885k), while early FlixPatrol data showed it falling out of the global Top 10s much faster than earlier runs. It currently sits at a series-low 60% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nevertheless, the final season is fully shot and will see the saga through to its natural conclusion.

What happens in The Witcher Season 5?

Season 5 is heavily expected to adapt the final segments of Andrzej Sapkowski’s core saga: The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake. After spending Season 4 scattered across the Continent, the core family of Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer will finally see their long-standing mission to reunite reach its climax in the latter half of the season.

  • Geralt of Rivia: Following his official knighting by Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia, Geralt and his Hansa (including Regis, Cahir, Milva, and Jaskier) fled her ranks. Angered by the desertion, the Queen sent soldiers in pursuit, leading to a violent clash—a sequence captured during filming by Redanian Intelligence. Geralt’s journey will eventually take the group to the picturesque duchy of Toussaint.
  • Yennefer: Despite the alarming cliffhanger at the close of Season 4, Yennefer lands safely on the Skellige Isles (a location familiar to fans of CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt). Her presence there resets her narrative back closer to the books after an almost entirely original storyline in Season 4.
  • Ciri: Season 4 ended on a brutal note when Leo Bonhart decimated The Rats and took Ciri captive. Season 5 kicks off with Ciri taken to Bonhart’s crime lord cousin, Dominik Houvenaghel, in Ebbing and forced to battle in a gladiatorial arena. Once she escapes, a ruthless posse is formed to hunt her down, setting the stage for the iconic and bloody book sequence near Tor Zireael—which promises the much-anticipated frozen lake confrontation.

How will The Witcher end?

Showrunner Lauren Hissrich has reiterated that the series intends to honor Sapkowski’s original literary conclusion:

I don’t feel the need to go beyond the existing books. They are great source material, Andrzej Sapkowski has written all of them, there is a natural ending to them and I feel like as long as we stick that landing, which is the ending of the books, then we’ll be good.

Reflecting on the ending after wrapping production, Hissrich added:

We have the ending. And there were certain things – I mean, the books go a little crazy. And I say that with the most deference because I love them. We lean so hardcore into fantasy at the end in wonderful ways that Sapkowski introduced us to. So we knew the stories that we needed to end with.

How the adaptation bridges the gaps given several heavily modified subplots remains to be seen, but the definitive book finale remains the target.

Who is in the new cast for The Witcher Season 5?

Returning leads Liam Hemsworth (Geralt), Freya Allan (Ciri), and Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) will be joined by a massive roster of newcomers, as well as returning villains like Sharlto Copley (Leo Bonhart) and James Purefoy (Nilfgaardian spymaster Stefan Skellen).

As detailed in our breakdown of over 25 new cast members, Season 5 introduces several pivotal book figures:

  • Ellie Taylor (Ted Lasso, Knuckles) as Duchess Anna Henrietta, the beloved ruler of Toussaint and a past romantic partner of Jaskier. She is expected to appear around episodes 5 and 6.
  • Emily-Jo Young (Sexy Beast) as fan-favorite medic Shani.
  • Neil Stuke (Silk) as Dominik Houvenaghel, the vicious arena owner and cousin of Leo Bonhart.
  • Liv Andrusier (Les Misérables) as Condwiramurs Tilly, a dream-reading oneiromancer featured in the storyline set a century into the future.
  • Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones) as Priestess Sigrdrifa on Skellige.
  • Sam Pamphilon (Geek Girl) as Cyprian Fripp and Yinka Awoni (I May Destroy You) as Zadarlik, joining Stefan Skellen’s tracking gang.
  • Nick Chadwin (Catching Lightning) as Gosta, the fisherman who encounters Ciri en route to Tor Zireael.
  • Andy Apollo (The Diplomat) as knight errant Reynart de Bois-Fresnes.
  • Chike Chan as Old Barring.
  • Jamie Michie (Baby Reindeer) as Dromgool.
  • Naomi Battrick (His Dark Materials) as Meena Coehoorn.
  • Taylor James (Vikings: Valhalla) as Baron de Trastamara.
  • Georgia Goodman (Wednesday) as Madam Toulouse.
  • Fergus Rattigan as Paddy the Dwarf, Clive Kneller as High Priest, and Adam Basil as Knocker.

Some other familiar faces are coming back too. According to Redanian Intelligence, Paul Bullion returns as the witcher Lambert alongside Zates Atour as Coen, with both likely to feature in the show’s take on the Battle of Brenna. Jeremy Crawford is back as the dwarf Yarpen Zigrin, and in a more surprising return, Joseph Payne reprises his Season 2 role as Jarre, who also plays a part in the Brenna storyline in the books. Danny Woodburn has also said his farewell to Zoltan Chivay after wrapping his final recording sessions in post-production.

What is the production status of The Witcher Season 5?

Development

Filming Scheduled

Filming Ongoing

Post-Production

Seasons 4 and 5 were planned from the start to be written and filmed almost back-to-back with a brief hiatus between schedules:

  • Season 4 Filming: April 2024 – October 2024
  • Season 5 Filming: March 2025 – September 2025

Hissrich has said the writers’ room treated the two seasons as one large story about the family’s journey back together, explaining that “it has to be 16 narrative episodes that feel cohesive.” That makes the extended gap between the two halves all the more notable. While principal photography was primarily based in the UK, Season 5 launched on location in Cape Town, South Africa, utilizing sets previously constructed for The Rats spinoff. Filming officially wrapped in late September 2025. Three directors share duties on the final season:

  • Jeremy Webb (The Last of Us, The Witcher Season 4) – Episodes 1, 7, and 8
  • Christopher Clark Cowan (action director on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and The Acolyte) – Episodes 3 and 4, marking his first outing as a lead director
  • Alex Garcia Lopez (The Witcher Season 1) – Episodes 5 and 6

While principal photography was primarily based in the UK, Season 5 launched on location in Cape Town, South Africa, utilizing sets previously constructed for The Rats spinoff. Filming officially wrapped in late September 2025.

When will The Witcher Season 5 release on Netflix?

While Netflix did originally point to a late 2026 release window as part of its Next on Netflix release, What’s on Netflix confirmed that Season 5 has quietly been delayed into 2027.

Eagle-eyed fans noticed the upcoming season was quietly scrubbed from Netflix’s public-facing 2026 promotional websites and media center. After a little digging, we were able to confirm the release has indeed shifted to next year.

According to industry reports, the delay isn’t just because of the massive post-production VFX runway needed to bring Sapkowski’s final battles to life. 2026 turned out to be an incredibly crowded year for high-budget fantasy television across rival streamers (including new seasons of The Rings of Power and House of the Dragon). By pushing The Witcher to 2027, Netflix avoids the glut of competition and gives Geralt’s final ride the breathing room to be the streamer’s massive tentpole for the year.

An exact date or month in 2027 has not yet been locked in by Netflix.

Season 5 won’t be the only Witcher arriving next year: CD Projekt Red’s new expansion for The Witcher 3, Songs of the Past, is also slated for 2027, with The Witcher 4 targeting 2028. On the literary side, Andrzej Sapkowski followed 2025’s Crossroads of Ravens by revealing in September that his next Witcher book is close to completion.
