Northern lights could be visible from Toronto tonight, here’s when to look up, Canada Reviews

8 October 20262 Mins Read

The northern lights could make a surprise appearance over Toronto tonight, with a geomagnetic storm potentially bringing the display to parts of southern Ontario!

According to The Weather Network, auroras could light up Canadian skies overnight on Thursday, Oct. 8, into the early hours of Friday, Oct. 9, thanks to solar activity that erupted earlier this week.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm watch for Friday, following a solar flare and a coronal mass ejection (CME) on Oct. 6. The geeky science behind it all: a CME is a massive burst of plasma and magnetic fields from the Sun that can trigger geomagnetic storms when it reaches Earth. When this solar activity reaches Earth, it can trigger colourful displays of green, pink and purple light that we know as the northern lights.

The strongest displays are expected farther north, but southern Ontario could still be in for a glimpse if conditions cooperate (the forecast suggests auroras could extend as far south as the northern Great Lakes!).

So, when to look up? Minor G1 geomagnetic storm conditions could begin around 11 p.m. tonight, with activity potentially intensifying to G2 levels around 5 a.m. Friday.

As usual, if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse, head somewhere safe away from city lights, preferably with an unobstructed view of the northern horizon (anywhere farther north of the GTA could offer better viewing opportunities than downtown Toronto).

A late-night skywatching session also depends on the weather. According to Environment Canada’s forecast, Toronto can expect partly cloudy skies with a 40 per cent chance of showers Thursday evening, but skies are expected to clear overnight.

Another advantage is the moon. With a new moon approaching on Oct. 10, there should be very little moonlight to interfere with potential aurora sightings.

Follow NOAA’s updated aurora forecast before heading outside.

Even if the auroras don’t appear tonight, there’s another treat for skywatchers: Muskoka is hosting a series of guided stargazing experiences beneath some of Ontario’s darkest skies over the next few weeks! And make sure to check out some of the best spots in Southern Ontario to watch celestial events.
