In plenty of Italian-American homes, Sunday means a pot of sauce simmering on the stove for hours while the whole family drifts in and out of the kitchen. Now one of New York’s most celebrated pizza families is sharing a taste of that ritual, with a little help from Shake Shack.
The Tuttolomondo family has a 60-year history of running pizza places on the Upper West Side. When Frank Tuttolomondo first tried selling thick, square slices at his family’s shop, though, New Yorkers weren’t sold. “I couldn’t give them away,” he told The New York Times. So at the end of 2017, he opened his own sliver of a slice shop on Broadway called Mama’s Too. Years later, Time Out ranked it No. 1 on its list of the best pizzas in the world, the only New York City pizzeria to make the cut.
That pizzeria’s Sunday Sauce is now the star of a limited-time menu with Shake Shack, the pair’s second team-up after a one-day-only collab burger in 2020. This time, Mama’s Too is leaving Manhattan for the first time, according to a press release. The menu is available at Shake Shack’s West Village location at 225 Varick St. through Nov. 8, then heads to the Williamsburg, Forest Hills and New Hyde Park Shacks from Nov. 12 to Nov. 15.

The star of the menu looks like it came from an old-school pizzeria, not a burger counter. The Sunday Sauce Meatball Parm Hero smothers Shake Shack meatballs in Mama’s Too’s sauce, then piles on ribbons of creamy stracciatella, a snowfall of Parmigiano Reggiano and fresh basil, all on a sesame-flecked semolina hero. Dessert gets the same treatment: the Tiramisu Sundae tumbles scoops of house-made tiramisu into vanilla frozen custard and espresso fudge, then crowns it with whipped cream, a cherry and a mini ice cream cone.
For fans in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island who have never made the trip to Mama’s TOO!’s Upper West Side neighborhood, it’s the easiest way yet to try its Sunday Sauce. Fittingly, both runs wrap up on a Sunday.
