There will be nudity in Marvel’s Wolverine — but there’s a catch

3 August 20263 Mins Read

It’s undeniable how much Marvel’s Wolverine pivots from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. There’s a lot more swearing, an incredible amount of blood and gore that’ll make even Mortal Kombat fans wince, and now, according to the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), there’s a chance we’ll see more of Logan Howlett, aka Wolverine, than just his yellow-spandex suit.

The ESRB assigns age and content ratings to video games based on its content and context, and how it is presented to the player. Coming in hot at a rating of Mature 17+, the board warns players of Marvel’s Wolverine that there will be content of blood and gore, drug reference, intense violence, strong language, and partial nudity.

However, if you’re expecting to see the full package from Wolverine come September, you’re bound to be disappointed: you’re only going to get snatches of “a character’s exposed buttocks.”

The full description of Marvel’s Wolverine at the ESRB can be read below:

Marvel’s Wolverine is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, and Strong Language. Also includes In-Game Purchases. This is an action game in which players assume the role of James Logan/Wolverine, as he reunites with Team X to stop a dangerous threat. From a third-person perspective, players use melee attacks and special skills to kill enemy soldiers and robots in frenetic combat. Players use their claws to slash, stab, and slice enemies; rage modes allow players to enact faster, more destructive combos and slow-motion finishers (e.g., dramatically stabbing an enemy in the head). Combat is highlighted by frequent blood-splatter effects, screams of pain, and dismemberment/decapitation. Battlefields are sometimes strewn with torsos and limbs; cutscenes can also depict blood and gore (e.g., characters tearing enemies apart, decapitating enemy soldiers). A handful of sequences briefly depict a character’s exposed buttocks. The dialogue references drugs (e.g., “It doubled my production of fentanyl.”). The words “f**k” and “sh*t” appear in the game.

The character whose buttocks will be exposed has not been specified, but as any fan of Hugh Jackman’s depiction of Wolverine will tell you, there have been a lot of butt shots over the years — namely in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Considering Marvel’s Wolverine will be tackling Wolverine’s origin story, it wouldn’t be too surprising if we get to see Logan’s butt just for old times’ sake. Alternatively, Mystique has been confirmed to be part of the game too, and while we doubt Insomniac Games will go down Fox’s route of adapting Mystique — where Mystique was pretty much naked 24/7 — it could happen.

Regardless of who the character is, sequences of buttocks will be had in Marvel’s Wolverine when it debuts on PlayStation 5 on Sept. 15.
