What is GEO? What It Means for Independent Hotels

5 November 202612 Mins Read

In Brief: Femke Nollet explains the concept of Google Enhanced Optimization (GEO), detailing how this digital marketing tool can help independent hotels increase direct bookings and strengthen their online presence against larger hotel brands.

It’s a Tuesday evening and a couple is planning an anniversary weekend. Instead of scrolling through pages of search results, they open an AI assistant and type: “Where should we stay near Bruges for a quiet weekend with a garden and a good breakfast?”. Within seconds they get three suggestions, each with a short explanation of why it fits. Consequently, those three hotels are the ones they’ll look at first and are more likely to get booked.

This process is becoming more and more common. Traffic to travel sites coming from AI sources grew 194% in 2026 compared to the year before. Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) are already adapting: BCG and NYU’s Tisch Center of Hospitality (March 2026) found that 37% of travelers already use AI assistants built into travel sites to plan and book trips.

It shows a broader shift in how travelers discover hotels. That also means that as an independent hotel, you’ll need to adjust to this new way of searching. You’ve probably heard and implemented SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategies, but that doesn’t always work for AI search. You’ll need to focus on GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). This guide explains what GEO is, and what it means for a hotel like yours.

Key takeaways:

  • GEO means making your hotel easy for AI assistants to understand, trust and recommend

  • SEO helps travelers find your website, while GEO helps AI describe your hotel, and the groundwork helps both

  • AI assistants look at four signals: clear facts, consistent information, proof from reviews and mentions, and accurate live rates

  • Your listings and reviews count as much as your website, so conflicting details can cost you recommendations

  • Start small: write your answers down once, check what AI says about your hotel monthly and fix wrong details at the source

What is GEO for a hotel?

GEO, short for Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of making your hotel easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude to understand, trust and recommend. At its core, that means: clear property facts, consistent listings, genuine reviews and accurate live rates working together.

The simplest way to remember the difference: search engine optimization (SEO) helps travelers find your website in organic search results on platforms like Google, while GEO helps AI assistants like ChatGPT find, describe and recommend your hotel. The two practices overlap quite often, so optimizing one usually helps the other.

New to the vocabulary? Our guide to AI booking terms for independent hoteliers explains GEO and the other terms you keep hearing in plain English.

  • Goal: SEO aims to rank in a list of search results; GEO aims to be recommended in an AI-written answer.

  • What the traveler sees: With SEO, a list of links to choose from; with GEO, a short answer naming a few hotels.

  • What it relies on: SEO relies on keywords, site structure, links from other sites and local listings; GEO relies on specific facts, consistent information, reviews, trusted mentions and accurate rates.

  • Your advantage: Local relevance for SEO; specific local knowledge and real character for GEO.

Why is GEO important for independent hotels?

AI assistants answer specific questions, like “What is the best pet-friendly hotel near Bruges with parking”, and they favor clear, verifiable details over generic marketing language. Independent hotels have those details in abundance: your unique location, your rooms, your breakfast and the personalized activities you recommend to your guests.

Here is an illustrative example. Imagine a 14-room boutique hotel called Hotel Aurora:

  • Hard for AI to use: “Welcome to our charming boutique hotel, where comfort meets style.”

  • Easy for AI to use: “Hotel Aurora is a 14-room guesthouse in Bruges, a five-minute walk from the old market square. We offer free parking, ground-floor rooms with step-free access, a ‘dogs welcome’ policy and breakfast with eggs from a local farm.”

The second version names the hotel and the town, and it gives facts a traveler can check. AI tools often lift a single sentence out of a page, so it helps when each key sentence makes sense on its own.

How do AI assistants decide which hotels to recommend?

AI assistants favor hotels they can describe accurately and with confidence. In practice, GEO usually comes down to four signals: clear facts, consistent information across sources, proof from reviews and trusted mentions, and accurate live rates and availability. A hotel that is clear on all four is easier for an AI assistant to recommend.

Clear facts: Specific details, such as room count, distances and pet policy, give an AI assistant something to quote. If you’re not sure how to get started, our guide to optimizing your hotel website for AI search shows you how to write them.

Consistent information: AI assistants don’t rely on your website alone. They also draw on OTA listings, review sites and other pages that mention your hotel. Research by AirOps on business software searches, covering 21,311 brand mentions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, found that 85% of brand mentions came from third-party content rather than the brand’s own site. It wasn’t a hotel study, but it shows how much AI assistants lean on what others say about a brand. You can find actionable ways to increase your AI visibility in our independent hotelier’s guide to AI visibility in 2026.

Conflicting information builds up easily over the years. Here is another illustrative example, for the same fictional hotel:

  • Hotel website: Dogs welcome, free parking, check-in from 3 pm

  • Google Business Profile: Check-in from 4 pm

  • OTA listing: No pets, paid parking

  • Review site: “Parking is limited”

An AI assistant that finds four different answers may repeat any one of them, or leave the hotel out of its answer. So make sure your details match on every platform that mentions your hotel. It can improve your chances of being recommended by AI assistants. The process is very similar to local SEO, so read our local SEO for hotels guide for a step-by-step walkthrough of keeping your Google Business Profile and other listings accurate.

Proof from others: Reviews and mentions from trusted sources tell an AI assistant that your hotel is what it says it is. Replying to reviews consistently is part of that. If you want to build up your reviews, our guide to reputation management and blog on how to increase Google reviews are good places to start.

Accurate live rates and availability: If an AI assistant can’t find reliable live information, it may point travelers to another property or a third-party website (like OTAs). Your booking engine and channel manager should send the same up-to-date prices and availability everywhere.

Where can independent hotels start?

You already know the answers AI assistants are looking for. You give them at the front desk every week: is there parking, what time is check-in, do you take dogs? A good first step is to write those answers down once and check that your website and listings all say the same. You don’t need a developer or a marketing department to begin. Our guide to AI visibility for independent hotels walks through the practical steps.

How can you check what AI says about your hotel?

Open an AI assistant and type what a guest might type, for example:

  • “Best boutique hotel near [attraction] with parking”

  • “Where to stay in [town] for a family weekend with a dog”

  • “What is [your hotel name] like?”

Travelers ask AI for more than a hotel name. In Adobe’s July 2026 survey of more than 5,000 U.S. consumers, research and inspiration were the top uses of AI for travel (43% for each category), followed by transportation planning (41%) and itinerary creation (34%). So also try questions about your area, such as “quiet things to do near [town] in November”, and see whether your hotel comes up.

After checking whether your hotel appears, you should see whether the details are right. Try two or three assistants, because they don’t always agree: in a study of business software searches, AirOps found that nearly 68% of brands appeared on only one AI platform. Hotels weren’t part of that study, but it is a good reason not to rely on a single assistant.

Answers also change from day to day, so repeat the check once a month, or at least every quarter, and note the prompt, the date and what was wrong. Alongside that, watch your direct booking sessions, searches for your hotel’s name and review sentiment, so you can see patterns over time. Our AI visibility guide covers this audit in more detail.

What should you do when AI gets your hotel wrong?

AI assistants build their answers from the sources they find, so a wrong detail often traces back to a wrong source. Fixing the source is the step that counts, because correcting an assistant in one chat is unlikely to change what it tells other travelers.

  • Write down exactly what’s wrong: Note the assistant, the prompt and the exact wording, such as a wrong check-in time or a missing parking policy.

  • Find where the wrong detail lives: Check your website, Google Business Profile, OTA listings and review sites. The details may be wrong or missing in more than one place. If it is a price or an open date, check what your booking engine and channel manager are sending out. You can also ask the AI assistant directly to disclose the used source.

  • Fix it at the source: Update the listing, then state the fact clearly on your website, ideally with your hotel’s name and town in the sentence. Keep a one-page fact sheet with your name, address, phone number, number of rooms, check-in and check-out times, parking, pet policy and distances to key attractions, so every platform says the same thing.

  • Wait, then test again: Assistants update at their own pace and nobody can promise how quickly a change shows up. Repeat the same prompt in a few weeks and compare.

How can you track your AI visibility over time?

Nobody can promise a mention in an AI answer and the tools keep changing, so small and steady habits tend to work better than one big push.

Checking by hand is a good start. Over time, it helps to see the bigger picture: how often AI assistants mention your hotel, how you rank against competing hotels and what to fix first. That is part of what Connect AI does. Lighthouse built it to help hotels track their visibility in AI chats and see which improvements matter most. To see how that tracking works, read Your hotel has an AI rank. Do you know what it is?

Frequently asked questions about GEO for hotelsWhat does GEO stand for?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It is the practice of making your hotel easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to understand, trust and recommend when travelers ask where to stay.

Is GEO different from SEO?

Yes, but they overlap. SEO helps your website rank in a list of search results, while GEO helps AI assistants describe and recommend your hotel in a written answer. Consistent facts, strong reviews and a detailed website help with both.

Is GEO the same as AEO or AI search optimization?

They are closely related. GEO, answer engine optimization (AEO) and AI search optimization all describe making your hotel easy for AI tools to use in their answers. This guide uses GEO.

Do I need a developer to start with GEO?

No. Matching your facts across listings, replying to reviews and checking your rates need no technical skills. Structured data may need help from whoever built your website, but it is not required to begin.

How do I find out if AI assistants recommend my hotel?

Ask them the questions your guests would ask, such as “best boutique hotel near [attraction] with parking”, then check whether your hotel is mentioned and whether the details are correct. Also track AI-referred traffic in your website analytics, if possible. Repeat monthly, or at least every quarter, and keep a short note of the results.

Does GEO mean writing for robots instead of guests?

No. The details AI assistants use, such as clear room descriptions, accurate policies and specific reviews, are the same details that help guests decide. Writing them down clearly serves both.

Do I need a different approach for each AI assistant?

The foundations are the same for every assistant: accurate facts, consistent listings, genuine reviews and correct rates. Results can still differ from one assistant to another, which is why it helps to test two or three.

Can I guarantee that my hotel appears in AI recommendations?

No. AI assistants choose what to mention using their own methods, and those change. You can make your hotel easier to understand and trust by keeping facts consistent, reviews healthy and rates accurate, which improves your chances without promising a result.

What tools can help me track my hotel’s AI visibility?

Asking AI assistants yourself is the simplest start. For ongoing tracking, Lighthouse’s Connect AI shows how often AI assistants mention a hotel, how it ranks against competing hotels and what to improve first.
