You can design your own glowing mosaic lamp at this Calgary art studio

21 May 20263 Mins Read

If you’re getting sick of the usual dinner-and-drinks plans in Calgary, this is your sign to switch things up. There’s a workshop in the city that lets you build your own glowing lamp from scratch.

You don’t need any experience to join in, just a bit of creativity, and you’re good to go!

Inside the workshop

The Mosaic Art Studio is a creative space in northeast Calgary that focuses on hands-on art experiences inspired by traditional Turkish mosaic design.

Once you sit down, you’re given everything you need to build your lamp, including a base, colourful glass pieces, and traditional materials. You also have the option to follow one of the provided patterns or just let your creativity flow and do your own thing.

And the best part? After you’ve finished designing your lamp, you’re more than welcome to take it home right away. Once it’s finished and lit up, you get to see your design glow, which might be the most satisfying part.

The entire process is designed to be super calming, so you’re not rushing and stressing about getting it perfect. The workshop runs for about 1.5 to 2 hours, giving you plenty of time to enjoy it at your own pace.

There are also cultural elements woven into the experience, including Turkish decor and traditional tea and coffee, which give it a deeper meaning beyond the craft itself.

The story behind mosaic lamps

According to Mosaic Art Studio, Turkish mosaic lamps have been around for centuries, dating back to the Ottoman Empire. They were traditionally handmade from small pieces of coloured stained glass, carefully arranged into detailed patterns for use in homes, palaces, and other places of gathering. Over time, they became more than just lighting; they evolved into a cultural art that reflects craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Workshops like this keep that tradition alive by letting people create their own versions of the lamp. By the end, you don’t just leave with a lamp; you’re walking out with something you built from scratch, so it feels way more meaningful.

It’s a very calm, creative experience and a great way to switch things up if you’re bored with your usual plans.
