You can skate on the ‘fastest ice in the world’ for $2 in Calgary

28 October 20263 Mins Read

A skating session that costs less than your morning coffee? Count us in. The Olympic Oval is hosting weekly skating sessions where you can hit the ice for just $2. The Jayman BUILT Monday Night Toonie Skate runs until March 2027, and we’ve got all the details on what to bring, rental costs, and what to expect.

What to expect at the Monday Night Toonie Skate

What is Monday Night Toonie Skate?

The Jayman BUILT Monday Night Toonie Skate is a weekly public skating session hosted at the University of Calgary Olympic Oval where you can skate for just $2. Sessions run on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m.

If you’ve never visited the Olympic Oval, the facility was built for the 1988 Winter Olympics and, according to the University of Calgary, it’s known for having “The fastest ice in the world,” and now serves as an athlete training centre and a place for the public to hit the ice.

What do I need to bring?

Before heading to the Olympic Oval, make sure you have skates and a helmet ready to go. Helmets are mandatory for all ages during the public skating session, and they need to be sport-approved with a chin strap. So, if you have a bike, ski, or hockey helmet, you can bring it with you.

If you don’t own a pair of skates, you can rent hockey or speed skates from the on-site Skate Shop for $7.75, which includes a helmet. Helmet-only rentals are also available for $2.50.

Where is the Olympic Oval?

The Olympic Oval is located on the University of Calgary Campus in northwest Calgary. If you’re driving, paid parking is available in Lot 10, which is closest to the facility.

If you’re taking public transit instead, then The Olympic Oval is accessible by CTrain on the Red Line, and you can use Calgary Transit’s trip planner to find the best route from your neighbourhood to the Oval.

So the next time you’re bored on a Monday night, grab a toonie and head to the Olympic Oval for a couple of hours of skating.

When: Monday nights
Time: 6 to 8 p.m.
Where: Olympic Oval — 288 Collegiate Blvd. NW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: $2 per person
