Calgary just opened a $26-million athletic park with two massive turf fields

8 October 20263 Mins Read

A new $26-million park has officially opened in northwest Calgary. Rocky Ridge Athletic Park sits beside Shane Homes YMCA and features two artificial turf fields with spectator seating, lighting for evening events, washrooms, and parking.

The multi-use fields can host a variety of sports, giving local teams and organizations more space to practice, play, and host games.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new athletic park, from what you’ll find there now to what’s coming next.

What to expect at Rocky Ridge Athletic Park

What is Rocky Ridge Athletic Park?

Rocky Ridge Athletic Park is a new City-operated sports facility designed to give northwest Calgary more space for practices, games, and competitions. According to the City of Calgary, City Council approved the $26-million project in 2021, and construction officially broke ground in September 2024 and wrapped up in 2026.

The park is part of the larger Rocky Ridge Athletic Complex, which will eventually include an indoor fieldhouse with a FIFA-standard field, and it is set to be complete in 2028.

What amenities does Rocky Ridge Athletic Park have?

The park has two artificial-turf, multi-use fields that are intended to be used for a variety of sports, not just soccer. According to the City of Calgary, the park also has washrooms, parking, spectator seating, and field lighting so you can use the fields in the evening.

Do I need to book the fields in order to play?

If you’re planning to use the fields, you’ll need to book them in advance. According to the City of Calgary, Rocky Ridge Athletic Park is currently available for bookings on Thursdays from 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bookings can be made through the City of Calgary website, where you can check availability and reserve a field for your team or organization.

Where is the park located?

Rocky Ridge Athletic Park is located in northwest Calgary, right next to the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge.

If you’re taking transit, Calgary Transit’s Route 115 serves the Rocky Ridge area and connects to Tuscany Station and the Rocky Ridge/Royal Oak area. From there, you’ll need to walk to the park. According to Calgary Transit, you can use its trip planner to find the best route based on where you’re travelling from.

Northwest Calgary has been expanding steadily, and the new athletic park is another sign of how quickly the area is growing. With more recreation spaces planned for the area, it’ll be exciting to see what comes next.

And of course. we’ll share more updates as they’re released.

When: Turf field bookings available on Thursdays and Saturdays
Time: Thursdays: 5 to 10 p.m.; Saturdays: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: 9700 Country Hills Blvd. NW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Adult rate: $161.50 per hour; Minor rate: $127.30 per hour
